Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM DOYLE, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
DESIGN FOR A PARLOR-STOVE.
Specification forming part of Design No. 6,586, dated April 15, 1873; application filed March 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DoYLE, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a Desi gn for Parlor- Stoves, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my design is fully represented in the accompanying photographic illustrations, to which reference is made.
My improved design relates to the class of stoves usually called base-burners, which are constructed with an illuminating or mice section; and my object is to give a graceful and ornamental appearance to the several distinctive parts of the stove, individually as such, as well as to the entire stove when made up by the assemblage of these distinctive parts, and to embellish the same with ornaments in accordance with the Gothic style of architecture.
Figure 1 is a front view of the parlor-stove. Fig. 2 is a back view of the same.
A represents the base of the stove, which in its outline very nearly resembles an ogee molding, the larger and lower member of which is ornamented with a row of heart shaped ornaments, b b, pointing upward, and which are united at their bottoms by inverted curves it having elongated points 0 between the principal ornaments b b. The upper and smaller member of the ogee is ornamented with a row of pointed arches, e e running illto and connected with each other at their bases. Both rows of ornaments b b and e e extend entirely around the base of the stove. B is the fire-pot section of the stove, which is curved inwardly and ornamented with three rows of Gothic ornaments, as shown in the accompanying figures. The principal and central ornaments are a series of quaterfoils within squares f f, separated by donble p'ointed ornaments g 9 between each alternate two squares; the upper and the lower rows of ornaments are smaller quaterfoils with central rosettes; the lower quaterfoils k h are larger than the upper ones ii. 0 is the illuminatingsection of the stove, which is constructed with double doors or windows k le, which are hinged at the center of lower part of the bottom so as to open downward. At the bottom of each illuminating-openiug l is a curved scroll ornament, 111, having solid ends a o,- the two inner and contigilous solid ends 0 o are drilled to receive the pintlc p of the hinge, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. D is the upper section or body of the stove. It is cylindrical in form, and on namented with blank Gothic windows a it placed at equal distances from each other all around the body of the stove. Said Gothic windows are separated from each other by spiral fillets r, the upper and the lower ends of which connect to two horizontal fillets or heads, 8 s, of similar design. Below each Gothic window is an ornamental panel, t. E is the top of the stove. F is the urn or topmost ornament of the same. The general configuration of the top E and urn F is shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The ornamentation of the top E is as follows: At 1 is a series of qnaterfoils similar in shape to those near the bottom of the fire-pot section B, and which have intermediate point ed ornaments v 11 between them. At 2 is a connected row of pointed arches similar in shape to those shown at e on the-base of the stove. At 3 is a series of smaller quaterfoils,
the adjacent sides of which are joined together. The shape and ornamentation of the urn are clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The open work 4 of the top of the urn consists of pointed arches,-which are connected by diamondshape open-work to a central and upper plain part, 5, of hexagonal form, the sides of which curve inwardly and run upward nearly to a point, upon which is surmounted a knob or finial, 6, of the form and design shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The micasection G and the fire-pot section B are united by a circular ring, 7, of the shape shown in the accompanying figures; and the mica-section G and body D are con nected to each other by a ring, 8, of a circular form, except at the back part of the stove, where said ring extends backward beyond the body of the stove sufliciently to contain an oval collar, 9, on which the Stovepipe is placed and supported. 10 is said backward-project ing part of ring 8. 11 is the back plate of the mica-section 0; its shape and ornaments are shown in Fig. 1.
I do not claim the use of Gothic ornaments of any of the well-known kinds, such as quatcrfoils or of pointed arches; but
What I claim as new, in my design for a parlor-stove, is-
1'. The design for the base A, ornamented with heart-shaped ornaments b, curved ornaments a, and pointed ornaments 0, also pointed arches e, as herein shown and set forth.
.2. The design for the fire-pot SCOtIOII B, curved inwardly and ornamented '1 th quaterfoils and squares, as herein set forth.
3. The design for the doors of the mica-section 0, 850., with the rings 7 and 8, as shown.
4. The Gothic panels u on the body of the stove, arranged and ornamented as herein shown.
5. The combination and arrangement of ornaments 1,2, and 3 on the top E of the stove, as herein shown and set fort 6. The design of the urn F, with its ornamentation, in combination with the top E, as herein shown.
7. The design of the parlor-stove, consisting of base A, fire-pot section B, iliuminatingsee tion 0, body D, top E, and rings 7 and 8 with or without urn F, as herein shown and described.
