UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFICE.
SETH WILLIAM BABBITT, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE INTERNATIONAL SILVER COMPANY, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
DESIGN FOR A CANDELABRUM.
SPECIIEICATION forming part of Design No. 35,453, dated December 1'7, 1901. Application filed October 19, 1901. Serial No. 79,307- Term of patent '7 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SETH WILLIAM BABBITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at lWIeriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Candelabrum; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to a new and original design for candelabra; and it is embodied in the shape, configuration, and general ornamentations presently to be described, and shown in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a candelabrum embodying the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing the.
upper central portion removed for the purpose of illustrating the general arrangement of the arms.
The design, as illustrated, comprises, generally speaking, a base, a standard, a series of arms, and a-central holder, the base portion being substantially of hexagonal formation, with slightly-curved edges between the points of angle and an overhanging cap or top portion. The surface of the base is divided into scroll parts or fields by scroll-shaped beadings, and the space between the beads directly below the overhanging portions is occupiedbysuitablepinnated designs. Mounted on the center of the base is the standard, having a circularportion, from which extends, on an upward curve, the body portion, which in turn is curved inwardly and somewhat elongated to form a stem terminating in an outwardly-flared portion. The body and stem of the standard are divided into equal fields by scroll-formed heads, the lowermost beads terminating in lobe shaped extensions, between which on the intervening space are pinnated representations. The upper portion of the standard isfancifully formed and has on the fields between the heading suitable fanciful bead effects. Springing from the top of the standard are a series of curved arms,
four in number. These arms are curved horizontallyin a graceful outward curve and bent downwardly, terminating in lobes and carrying on their sides substantially U-shaped extensions, the inner ends of which are branched and rounded, while the outer ends carry suitable finishing points or projections, which in turnsupportthecandle-holders. Theseholdheretofore described, the same being sup- 7o ported on a pedestal, the lower part of which is fashioned to represent scrollwork.
The essential features of the design reside more particularlyin the general arrangement and shape of the various parts referred to, 75
irrespective of the minute details.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for a candelabrum substantially 80 as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
S. WILLIAM BABBITT.
