Description

DESIGN.
H. C. DOWD.
HOE.
No. 28,811. Patented June 7,1898.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY CLAY DOXVD, OF CARTIIAGE, NORTH CAROLINA.
DESIGN FOR A HOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 28,811, dated June 7, 1898.
Application filed May 5, 1898. Serial No. 679,353. Term of patent 14 years.
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY CLAY Down, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carthage, in the county of Moore and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and original Design for a Hoe, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and original design for a hoe; and it has for its object to provide a design of this character that shall be both useful and ornamental.
The leading feature of the design resides in a hoe-body of an approximately inverted-U shape and provided with an upper concavoconvex segment having its curved lower edge extending transversely across the body and a lower narrow flat portion having angular corners and straight side edges merging into the curved peripheral edges bounding said concavo-convex segment.
The minor features of the design are the concave-convex segment of the body having its curved peripheral edges bent outwardly and the body having at its top edge an approximately triangular shank extension dis posed at an angle to the body and provided with a curved upper face lying in the circular plane of the peripheral edges of said concave-convex portion and with beveled side edges on its under face.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hoe-blade embodying the hereindeseribed design. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fi 3.
Fig. 5 is a central vertical sectional view of the hoe-blade.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 4
the numeral 1 designates a hoe-blade body of an approximately inverted-U shape and provided with an upper concave-convex segment 2. The eoncavo-convex segment 2 has a lower curved edge 3, forming a superficial ridge extending transversely across the body from edge to edge, and the curved peripheral edges of said concave-convex segment are bent outwardly to form curved peripheral flanges 4. The blade-body has projected beyond said concave-convex segment 2 a narrow fiat portion 5, having angular corners and straight side edges merging into the curved peripheral edges bounding the concave-convex segment. At its top edge the blade-body is provided with an approximately triangular shank extension 6, disposed at an angle to the body and having a curved upper face lying in the circular plane of said peripheral edges of the said concave-convex portion. The said triangular shank extension is further provided with beveled side edges 7 on its under face.
NVhat I claim is- The design for a hoe herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY CLAY DOWD.
