UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN JAY GRAVES, OF BUFFALO, NEIV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO SHERMAN S. J EWVETT & (10., OF SAME PLACE.
DESlGN FOR A COOKING-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 24,395, dated June 11, 1895.
Application filed May 13,1895. Serial No. 649,188. Term ofpatent 7 years.
To all whont it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, JOHN JAY GRAVES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a certain new and original Design for Cooking Stoves and Ranges; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My new and original design has for its object to ornament a cooking stove or range.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the design, and Figure 1 of such drawings is a perspective view of a stove ornamented with mydesign. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the door II, immediately above the ashreceptacle. Fig. 3 is an elevation of that portion of the base which is immediately below the ash-receptacle. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the shelf in front of and below the oven-door.
The leading and characteristic features of my design are the surface ornamentations of the stove as a whole, and of the several segregable features thereof to be hereinafter pointed out, and which are illustrated in the drawings.
The base of the stove, consisting of the skirting, M, and the legs, is ornamented with a foliated design in which the volute is a conspicuous feature, the volutes expanding or widening toward their centers. The same characteristic feature of ornamentation, that is, the foliated design with the volute as a conspicuous feature, is used throughout in the ornamentation of the stove, the designs upon the various parts of the stove being adapted to the shapes of the parts and the surfaces to which they are applied.
The end of the reservoir attachment, A, has two ornaments, 2 and 3. The ornament, 2, extends along the lower edge of the reservoir attachment where there are a nu mberof the heavy volutes, and along the edge of the attachment adjacent to the oven. The ornamen t, 3, is at the upper outer corner of the ends of the reservoir attachment, and is of approximately triangular shape extending along the top and outer edge of the attachment, and has a volute in its central portion.
The oven door, L, is boldly ornamented with foliated relief work, the design beingin two parts which spring and expand from the opposite lower corners of the door, and cover practically the entire surface thereof.
The shelf, 0, which is arranged directly below the oven door, is substantially rectangular in outline, its edges being curved downward, and the design which covers its upper surface extending over the curved edges. A plan view of this shelf is shown in Fig. at.
The door, D, at the end of the combustion chamber has practically its entire surface covered with a design having the characteristics hereinbefore referred to.
The side of the stove beneath the door, D, is ornamented with a design, E, composed almost entirely of heavy volutes.
At the end of the ash receptacle there is a design, F, having a heavy central volute and lighter volutes and foliated portions snrrounding it.
At G there is an ornament at the end of the pouch feed to the combustion chamber.
The door, II, situated immediately above the top of the ash receptacle and opening into the fire chamber is provided with draft openings which are surrounded by ornamental designs, 4. The upper portion of this door bears the name of the stove at the space marked 5, but this I have not shown.
At the back of the stove, and extending in either direction from the smoke fine is the ornamental grille, I, the same characteristic features appearing in this part asin the other parts of my design.
The feed door, J, at the end of the stove, and above the door, II, is provided with draft openings and is ornamented around such openings.
Having thus described mynew and original design, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a design for a range or cooking stove, the design for the base, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a design for a range or cooking stove, the design for the oven door, substantially as shown and described.
3. In adesign fora range or cooking stove, the design for the shelf, C, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a design for a range or cooking stove, the design for the door, D, at the end of the combustion chamber, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a design for a range or cooking stove, the design for the door, H, at the end of the stove opening into the fire chamber, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a design for a range or cooking stove, the design for the feed door, J, substantially as shown and described.
7. In a design for a range or cooking stove, the design for the grille, I, substantially as shown and described.
8. The design for a cooking stove or range, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN JAY GRAVES.
