CARPET.
Patented Apr. 3. 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES L. FOLSOM, OF BROOKLYN, NEXV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE HARTFORD CARPET COMPANY, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
DESIGN FOR A CARPET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 18,231, dated April 3, 1888.
Application filed January 26, 1888. Serial No. 262,063. Term of patent 3:) years.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES L. FoLsoM, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and original 5 Design for Carpets, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying photograph, which forms a part of the same.
The invention relates to a design to be Worked into or upon surfaces, such as carpets or similar fabrics; and it consists in the novel configuration and grouping of figures herein specifically shown and claimed.
The accompanying photograph is a face view of a carpet showing my new design.
My design consists of the figures A, B, O, and D, disposed, as shown, upon a ground of net-work ornamented with small geometrical forms.
Figure A has at one part a large circular geometrical form, from the edges of which 6X tend small blocl -work projections or crossshaped forms. This large circular form is ornamented with small geometrical figures,
and is separated from the rest of the entire figure by a Grecian borderwork. The restof the figure Ais composed ofsmall circular forms of asomewhatsimilar character closely massed and havinga block-work border or outline of an irregular form.
Figure B has at one part a large circular geometrical form, with conventionalized leaf forms at the center surrounded by geometrical ornamentation and block-work. From the 3 5 sides of this form extend block-shaped projections. This large circular part is separated from the rest of the figure by a Grecian borderwork. The rest of the figure consists of a group of geometrical flower and leaf forms having a block-work border more or less regu- 4o larly indented.
Figure 0 has at one part a large circular geometrical form, consisting of crossed bars or hands ornamented with small geometrical figures, and having block-shaped arms project 5 ing from its circumference. This large form is separated from the rest of the figure by a Grecian border-work. The other part of the figure consists of a group of square or diamond shaped geometrical forms having a very g0 irregular block-work border.
Figure Dhas at one part a large circular geometrical form, consisting of radiating bars or bands ornamented with small geometrical figures, and having at its center a smaller circular figure similar to itself. This large form is separated from the other part of the figure hyaGrecian border-work. The rest of the figure is made up of square geometrical forms arranged in a continuous hotly having an irregular block-work border.
These figures are arranged upon a ground of irregular net-like work. In the spaces formed by this net-like work are a number of blocks resembling crosses and other small geometrical forms.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The design for carpets, consisting of the figure O, substantially as shown. 7c 2. The design for carpets, consisting of the figures A, B, O, and D and the ground-work,
substantially as shown.
JAS. L. FOLSOM.
