Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GRAHAM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 16,374, dated November 10, 1885.
Application filed May 19, 18H5. Serial No. 166,037. Term of patent 3i years.
T o aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new Design for a Font of Printing-Type, of which the following is a specitication, reference being had therein to the accompanying printed specimens.
My invention consists of a new design for a font of printing-type of inclined letters, numerals, and characters, in which every part of each letter, numeral, and character consists of miniatures of itself of the same style and inclination placed closely together, so that the lines forming the miniatures are in line with and completely form the full-size letters, numerals, and characters. For example, the full-size letters of this font being of plain style and inclined forward, the miniature letters are of the same style and are given the saine forward inclination as the full-sized letters.
The character & is inclined backward, and is composed of miniatures of itself, having the same backward inclination.
The combination AND is inclined upward, and the letters are smaller than the full size of the corresponding letters of the font, being composed of a less number of miniature letters. In the word THE` the top of T is in line with the middle ot' H.
I am aware that vertical composite letters consisting of miniatures of themselves have heretofore been printed, and I do not claim the design for such vertical composite letters; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The design fora font of printing-type of inclined letters, numerals, and characters, each consisting of miniatures of itself ofthe same style and inclination, substantially as set forth.
2. The design for a font of printing-type of inclined letters, numerals, and characters, each consisting of miniatures of itself of the same style and inclination, the combination AND being inclined upward, and in the combination THE the top of T is on a line with the middle of H, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof l afx my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
JOHN GRAHAM.
