TYPE.
No. 16.122. Patented June 2,1885.
PXEGDBFGHHIJKLLM NN PQRSST \XJXYZKRLZZCE TCW D SZLS ZEQ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DESIGN FOR TYPE.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
13c itknown that I, \VILLIADI F. CAII'IAIX, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and original Design for a Font of Printing-'lype, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying printed specimens.
My invention consists of a new design fora font of printing-type, as hereinafter fully set forth, and as shown in the printed specimens.
The letters, characters, and numerals, and all their ceriphs of the design are formed of lines of uniform thickness.
The right line of A extends below the bottom ofthe left line, and these lines do not meet, but are connected at the top by a horizontal line extended beyond the side lines. The middle line of this letter and of II extends across and beyond the left side line.
The lower curve of B extends below and forminates in an upward curve near the back, above the bottom of the vertical line of the letter.
The upper right portions of G, G, and S are formed by horizontal and downward vertical lines, and the bodies of these letters are formed by the continuation of the horizontal lines, curved and terminating in O in a central scroll, and in G in a backwardl y extended horizontal line, and in S in a scroll.
The bottom horizontal line of E extends farther forward than the top line, and this bottom line of this letter and of L terminates in an upward left oblique line.
The middle portions of E and F are formed by straight horizontal lines and forwardly in clined lines. The right vertical lines of one form of H and N and of the letter U and the upper inclined lines of K, X, and Y are ex tended above the left portions of those letters.
The upper ceriphs of J K, and Y are ex tended farther beyond the left than the right of the upper portions of these letters.
The left vertical line of M extends above and below the top and bottom of the left line, and the middle lines cross each other, and are con nected at the bottom by a horizontal line.
The left vertical lines of both forms of N cx- (or R} tend below the bottom of the right portions of the letter.
O and the body of Q are true circles. The. distinguishbig-mark of Q is a straight line inclined backward at the top, and extending an equal distance above and below the bottom line of the body of the letter.
The line forming the upper forward portion of P is extended downward and connected with the vertical line near its base.
The upper forward portion of ll is formed by a horizontal and curved line terminating in front of the middle of the vertical line, and the lower forward portion of this letter is formed by a straight line extended from the termination of the upper portion downward obliquely to the right, below the bottom of the vertical line. and terminates in a horizontal line extended backward.
The inclined sides of V and \V do not meet, but are connected at the bottom by horizontal lines extended beyond the side lines. The left portion of \V is extended below the rightportion, and the inner inclined lines cross each other, and are connected at the top by a horizontal line.
The lower portion of Z consists of a horizontal and an inclined line extended upward and forward of the upper corner of the letter.
The top of the character & is a straight hori zontal line, which is extended at an acute angle to the top line, downward obliquely to the right, across the curved body of the character.
The letters A 11 in the diphthongs [it and (E are formed the same as when used separately, except that the left portion of A is extended below the bottom of the other portions of the diphlhong.
In the word The the top line of T extends across the upper portion of the vertical line of h, and terminates in an upward backward curve. The forward portion of h extends below its vertical line, and terminates in a horizontal line extended forward. The bottom line of T extends forward below the body of h. e is detached, and is located between the top line of T and the bottom line of h.
The letters in the word AND are the same as when used in other words, or separately. A is placed so that its lower ceriph intersects the middle portion of the left vertiml line of N, and D is placed so tlnit its top line extended intersects the lower portion of the right rerticnl line of N.
In the combination CH the line forming; C intersects the upper portion of the left verticnl line of H, and terminates at the top in it curve back of and near the top of that line, and is curved downward below that line, and terminates below heel; of the front line of H.
In the character C0. (3 encircles most of o. A curved line is extended from the top of the letter O downward and forward across the upper portion of and terminates within the letter 0.
The elmrneterFf is composed ofS, formed as described and shown, and a single vertical line through the center of S.
l A short curved line extends downward and backward from the top of the numeral 1. The top of 4 is scrolled backward. The bottom of 7 terminates in :1 forward scroll. The top of 8 is formed by a horizontal line with a downward, short, vertical terminal line. At the upper right corner of this numeral the lines are not connected. The numeral 9 is formed by a continuous disconnected curved line.
\Vhnt I claim as new, :ind drsire to swaniw ll; Letters Patent, is-
The design for :t tent oi printingtywn in which the right side line oi A extends below the left line; the upper ends of the side linm are connected by :1 horizontal line (Xtcnliwl beyond the side lines, and the middle lines or ters J K M N O P Q R V \V Z and the other i portions of the design being substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
