fW/m' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
ARTHUR W. LYMAN, OF MONTAGUE, MASSACHUSETTS.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS, FORKS, OR KNIVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,770, dated February 14, 1882. Application filed December 9, 1881. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. LYMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mon tague, in the county of Franklin and State of} Massachusetts, have originated and invented a new and useful Design for a Handle for Spoons, Forks, or Knives; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a plan viewof my newly-designcd handle for spoons, forks, or knives. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a side view, thereof.
Formerly the handle for spoons and cutlery has been made with a bead raised or struck up on its upper surface, extended'along its shank, and branched off into two parts extended along the edges of its outer widened portion, terminating in a partly diamond form, surrounded by scroll or fancy work in some cases, in an oval form in others, in an oval form with corresponding central piece in others, and in a partly diamond shape with an outer correspondinglyshaped brad and corresponding central piece in others.
The distinguishing feature ofmy design consists of a bead extended from the inner end or bowl to a point a little beyond the center, from thence dividing and forming a beaded loop with an angular-shaped end, and inclosing a diamond-shaped central piece or figure having a stem or terminal extending inwardly toward the convergence of the looped portion of the bead, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
In carrying out my design I form the handle A of the spoon, fork, or knife, as the case may be, with a bead, B, struck up or raised upon the upper surface thereof, extended from the bowl, tines, or blades, as the case may be, to a point upon the handle a little past its center, whence it is formed or divided, as at a, into two branches, B, extended along the edges of the outer widened portion of the handle, as at a a, and terminated in an angular-shaped end, as at a Within the looped portion of the head is arranged a diamond shaped centerpiece or ornament, 0, having a terminal or stem, 0, extended inwardly toward and nearly to the point of convergence of the said looped portionofthc head. This configuration greatly enhances the aesthetic effect or appearance of the handle, making it attractive as well as salable.
I claim- The design for a handle for a fork, knife, or spoon herein shown and described, the same consisting of a bead, B, struck up or raised on its upper surface, extended from its inner end to a point a little pastits center, thence formed into a loop whose. sides extend along the edges of its widened portion and terminate in an angular-shaped end, within which is arranged a diamond-shaped center figure, 0, having a terminal or stem, 0, extendingtoward the point of convergence a of the looped portion of the head.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
A. W. LYMAN.
