UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES OSBORNE, OF NEW? YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE IVHITING MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS, 86C- SPECIFIGATION forming part of Design No. 25,433, dated April 28, 1896.
Application filed March 20, 1896. Serial No. 584,181. Term of patent 7 years.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHAELEs OSBORNE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented and produced a certain new and original Design for Handles for Spoons and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure 1 is a view of the obverse, and Fig. 2 is a view of the reverse, side of a handle, showing my design.
The leading features of my design are the paddleshaped head, widened at the upper end and terminating in scrolls, the shell sunk in the raised surrounding surface, the sprays of blossoms and leaves in relief within the unbroken portion of the outline of the head, and the shank ornamented with blossoms and having its contour broken by leaves.
The head is of a paddle shape, swelling outwardly or widening at the upper end and having its outline unbroken by ornament from such swell to a leaf at the junction with the shank. At the extreme upper end is a lobe or drop flanked by short incurved scrolls joining longer convex scrolls terminating at the unbroken lines forming the contour of the remaining portion of the head. The front face or obverse shows a shell near the upper end, deeply sunk below the raised surrounding surface, producing a pleasing effect of weight and massiveness at that point.
In the panel formed below the shell by the slightly-depressed central portion of the head are gracefully arranged sprays of blossoms and leaves interspersed with ornamental scrolls or stems.
The narrowing of the panel at the junction of the head and shank forms a groove or depression along the center line of the latter, in which are upright sprays of the same flowers separated fronreach other by conventional foliate ornaments extending beyond the general outline and breaking the latter at intervals. The shank widens slightly near the lower end and connects to the bowl, prongs, or blade by diverging incurved scrolls or ogee ornaments.
The reverse of the handle is similar to the front face in general appearance, but differs in that the shell is partially surrounded by a foliate ornament and the sprays of blossoms and leaves are more open and simpler.
It will be understood that the design is ap plicable to all classes of table flat ware.
I claim- 1. In a design for a handle for spoons or similar articles, the obverse as herein shown and described.
2. In a design for a handle for spoons or similar articles, the reverse as herein shown and described.
3. The design for a handle for spoons or similar articles herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the invention above set forth I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES OSBORNE.
Witnesses:
