DESIGN FOR A CARPET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,515, dated October 11, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WINTHRoP L. JACOBS, of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and original Design for Carpets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a new and original design for carpets and similar fabrics; and it consists in the novel grouping and configur0 ration of figures hereinafter more fully described.

The accompanying photograph illustrates a face view of a carpet having my new design.

A is a large rosette. Below it are two connected rosettes, B B, set in a branch having leaves. figure, 0, having a rosette, a, at its lower end and a part of a rosette, b, near the upper end. A branch connects the figure C with a figure, D, which appears to be made up of superposed rosettes, and from which projects a branch, (I, with three floral projections. Above figure D is the figure E, composed of overlapping rosettes set in a branch. Below figure 1)., some- 2 5 what to the left, is a figure, E, composed of a square, which is flanked by rosettes and leaves. G is a large star-shaped figure with a small rosette at one side. H is a round figure capped with a crown-like ornament, 6, above which is 0 part of a rosette, f. At the left figure H connects with a square figure, 9, having round projections on three sides. Above the figure g is the large richly-cmbel1ished rosette I, from which project sundry leafed branches that unite To the right of these is a cross-shaped it to the otherfigures. Between figuresBa-ndl 3 5 is the figure J, composed of rosettes and of a fan-shaped central ornament. The two stems reaching contact with figure J are not part of said figure. To the right of figure I is a floral ornament, K, growing 011 a stem that projects from the figure C. Below figure K is the group L, composed of a rosette with leafy projections. Below the figure II is the figure S, composed of rosettes and leaves. Below figure S is figure M, of fanciful outline. To the 4 5 right of figure M is figure N, a square with fan-like projections. The figure O, to the right of figure N, resembles a butterfly in outline. The figure P below is a large and much. embellished rosette. Qis afigure made up of superposed rosettes. The figure R is cross-shaped and flanked with rosettes. All these figures and many of lesser importance are set in leaves and buds, and together make up a rich decoration for the carpet.

Intersperscd between the figures are clouds composed of hexagons, which, though constituting connecting-links for the figures, still leave the outline of each distinct and clearly discernible.
