UNDERWAIST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1911.
Application led June 4, 1910. Serial No. 564,944.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l', BLANCHE L. Moonn, acitizen of the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underwaists, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates broadly to apparel and particularly to an underwaist, to be worn by children and provided with means to protect the spinal column from injuries caused by blows upon the same.
In order to protect the spinal column and accordingly the spinal cord, I have provided an underw-aist for children, and supplied the same with pockets to receive pads which will cover the spinal column and protect the same from undue blows and jars. l further provide the underwaist with sections of material depending from the same and provi-ded with pockets to receive pads to cover the knees, and protect the anterior crural nerves.
A. further object of this invention is to provide an underwaist of the above character, which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and which will not cause the wearer discomfort.
Tn the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the underwaist. F ig. 2 is a similar view of a part used in connection with the waist.
n the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of an underwaist having the general shape as shown. The body portion 1 is provided near its upper end with the spaced openings 2, for the reception of the arms of the wearer. The underwaist is formed open in front, as shown, and one edge thereof is provided with buttons 8 to coperate with button holes 4 fo-rmed through the opposite edge of said waist.
The body portion 1 may be formed of any suit-able fabric, and the same is provided centrally thereof and preferably upon its inner surface, with a vertically disposed section of knitted web 5. This web is sewed to the body portion 1, as shown at 5. Strips or tapes are preferably stitched to the body portion 1 at the junction of the same with the web, as shown at 6. The web 5, is provided at spaced intervals with horizontal slits 7, whereby said web forms with the body portion 1, a plurality of pockets 8. The web 5 and the body portion 1 are stitched together as shown at 9, whereby the pockets 8 are separated from each other. It is to be understood that suitable pads 10 are to be inserted within the pockets 8. Tt is to be understood that instead of employing a plurality of pockets 8, T may employ a single pocket, to receive a relatively long pad. The body portion 1 is provided as shown, upon opposite sides of the web 5, with tapes or strips 11, which extend above the opening 2 and are stitched to the body portion 1. The tapes 11 extend downwardly in a substantially vertical manner, and terminate as shown, at the lower end 12 of the body portion 1. The body portion 1 is further provided upon each side of the web 5, with upwardly extending tapes or strips 13 which are stitched to said body portion and connected with the tapes 11, as shown at 14. The strips 13 serve to reinforce the body portion 1 and prevent the lateral displacement of the web 5 and also tend to support the same. The body portion 1 is provided near its lower end 12 and upon its outer side, with tapes or strips 15 stitched to the same to form a waist band. These strips are provided with buttons 16 to support the lower garments of the wearer.
The body portion 1 is provided near its free edges with depending sections or strips 16, which are provided at their lower ends and preferably upon theirl inner sides, with sections of elastic web to form pockets 17. These pockets 17 are designed to receive pads similar to pads 10 to cover the knees of the wearer to protect the same. A hose sup porter 18, may be suitably secured to the waistband as shown at 19, and said hose supporter will accordingly extend downwardly upon the outer side of the section 16, as shown.
In the use of my under-waist, the same is placed upon the wearer, and the pads within the pockets 8 will cover the spinal column. f it should be desired7 medicated pads may be inserted within the pockets S. The pockets 17 containing pads, are inserted within the stockings of the wearer and are to be disposed over the knees. The stockings of the wearer may be connected with the hose supporters 18, whereby said stockings are retained in their proper position and the pockets 17 accordingly held in place.
I wish it understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a. preferred embodiment of 5 subjoined claims.
Having fully described my invention, I claimz l. A body garment, comprising a body portion, provided with a pocket, a illing for said pocketto be arranged adjacent the spinal column of the wearer, depending strips connected with said body portion, provided with pockets, and pads for insertion within said pockets to protect the knees of the wearer.
2. An underwaist to be worn by children, comprising a body portion formed open in front, a plurality of pockets orined open at their upper ends and arranged in end to end relation to each other and secured upon said body portion to cover the spinal column of the wearer, and pads to fill said pockets.
3. An underwaist to be worn by children, comprising a body portion formed open in front, a plurality of pockets arranged in end to end relation to each other and secured centrally upon the inner side of said body portion to cover the spinal column of the wearer, pads to be removably placed within said pockets, sections of material depending from said body portion, pockets formed upon the ends of said sections, and pads for insertion within the last named pockets.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
