Description

(No Model.)
G. W. HILL.
PROTECTIVE GARMENT. NQ. 345,899. Patented July 20, 1886.
WITNESSES INVENTOR i My 1' ATTORNEYS.
' UN TED STATES PATENT QFFICE. r
GEORGE, WV. HILL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PROTECTIVE GARM ENT PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,899, dated July 20, 1886.
Application filed Ocloher 2S, 1885.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. I'IJLL, of New York city, vin the county of New York and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Protective Garments, which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in whichand for the prevention of-diseases resulting from exposure.
My invention consists of one or more pockets of suit-able materials, such as cotton cloth or flannel, opened in one edge thereof, and
- adapted to receive a sheet of paper approximate] y of the size'and shape of the pocket, and rendered water-proof in any suitable way.
In the drawings I have shown pockets A B,
' of a suitable form to be worn for the protection of the chest and back, the pockets being connected'by shoulder-straps G, which are permanently secured to one end of one of the pockets and attached by buttons to one end of the other pocket.
For convenience in introducing and remow ing the waterproofed paper, I form an open lng, D, 1n the side of each pocket for admitting Serial No. 181,161. (No model) a sheet of paper, E, contained by each pocket of approximately the same form as the pocket. The paper sheet E is rendered water-proof by covering its sides'with shellac-varnish, or by saturating it with melted paraffine, or in any other suitable or desirable way. The paper 4-) rendered water-proof in this manner is nnaf" footed by perspiration, and will not be per meated by water from without, It also effectively excludes cold, so that the portions of the body protected by my improved device are 1,5 not liable to sudden changes of temperature.
I am aware that ordinary pasteboard covered with textile material is notnew in a chest protector. I am also aware that it is not new to form a chest-protector of cloth or felt ce- 5o mented to opposite sides of a thin sheetof rubber. Therefore I do not claim either of these devices.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lettcrs Patent, is-
A protective garment formed of independent pockets A B, of textile material, each having an opening, D, in the edge thereof, a sheet,
E, of water-proof material, inserted in each pocket, and shoulder-straps 0, connecting the upper edges of the pockets, substantially as herein specified.
