ELASTIC BUTTON-HOLE ATTACHMENT FOR GARMENTS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,055, dated October 27, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AMELIA R. LANE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Elastic Button-Hole Attachments for Garments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates especially to devices employed for attaching or securing one garment to another by the aid of buttons, and has for its object the provision of a device simple and cheap to construct, easy to apply, and which will render the garment to which it is attached much more serviceable than has heretofore been the case.

To attain the desired end my invention consists in the combination, with the waistband of a pair of trousers, of the series of double reversible elastic button hole strips permanently secured thereto at their centers in a vertical position, as set forth, said strips being adapted and arranged to engage with buttons upon another garment at one or both extremities at the same time.

My improvement is particularly intended for use upon boys clothing, and is to take the place of the usual band containing the button-hole sewed upon the interior of the waistband of trousers, &c. The elastic strips or loops are sewed or otherwise secured in the same position as the above-mentioned band, and will permit the free movement of the body without tearing off the buttons or ripping or tearing the garments. I prefer to provide button holes or loops at each end of the elastic, and secure the same to the garment at its center, as in this construction if one button hole or loop be torn out or broken the other may be brought into use, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the ordinary loand containing the button-holes and attached to a garment. Fig. 2 shows my method of arranging the elastic strips and securing them to the garment. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view at line as 00 of Fig. 2, showing the location and arrangement of the Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show the different methods of arranging the device.

In Fig. 1 I have illustrated the usual method of arranging the button-holes A upon a band, B, sewed to the interior of a garment, G. This method is open to the objections pointed out above.

In Figs. 2and 3 I have shown my improved device for use in lieu of that shown in Fig. 1. 6o

0 is the body of the garment made in the usual manner with a waistband, D. E are strips of elastic material, wherein are formed button-holes A. These strips are secured to the band of the garment by a single line of 6 stitches, a, or by means of rivets a.

A portion of the garment whereon the buttons are sewed is represented by the fragment F.

Instead of using the flat elastic lEl, Figs. 2, 3, and 4, a simple double loop made of elastic cord may be employed, as illustrated in Fig. 5; or a metal eye or loop maybe used, as in Fig. 6.

In Fig. 4 I have shown pieces of metal 6, as secured to the extremities of the elastic to prevent fraying or tearing out of the buttonholes.

My device will be found admirably adapted to the use and purposes for which it is intended, as each button may be readily reached, and wherever the strain upon the garment is greatest, caused by stooping, throwing up the arm or leg, 850., the elastic will permit the garments to accommodate themselves to the movement, and the garment may be made to fit the form in a much more satisfactory manner, than has heretofore been possible, and the health of the wearer will not be affected, as in the old construction and arrangement of 0 the band containing the button-holes. If the upper hole or loop be broken,it may be pushed out of the way or removed, and the lower one turned upward to take its place; or, where greater strength is required, the two loops may be buttoned to the upper garment at one and the same time.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
