Description

P. F. KNUTHE.
HOSE SUPPORTER- APPLICATION nun mu 5,1908.
Patented Feb. 23, 1909.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK l KNOTHE, OF RIDGEWOOD, NEW JERSEY.
HOSE-SUPPORTER.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK F. KNo'rnE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Ridgewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the class of hose-supporters or garters that are adapted to be fastened around the leg, and partlcularly to those garters adapted to be worn below the knee.
The object of my invention is to provide a hose-supporter or garter which will readily conform to the leg of the wearer, and which will have the effect to be substantially selftightening around the leg under the strain of the attached hose, whereby to reduce the liability of the garter slipping down along the leg.
By means of my improvements the garter may be made mainly of leather or nonelastic material, and need not be fastened so tightly around the leg to kee it from slipping down as to be uncomfortable to the wearer.
Another object of my invention is enerall to improve the garter of the cass speclfied. I
In carryin out my invention, I provide a pluralit 0? members which are plvotally or movab y connected together, in the example shown two of the members (the end members) being ivotally connected at their ends to the adiacent ends of an intermediate member, with means to detachably connect the outer parts of the two end members together, and a garment clas attached to one of said end members, afi whereby when the members are attached together around the leg the strain of the hose will tend to cause the two end members to swing downwardly with respect to the intermediate member, whereby the garter is tightened around the leg to retain 1t in its pro er position.
y invention also comprises the novel details of improvement that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to ing$ drawings forming part hereof, wherein,
igure 1 1s a view i lustrating the garter in use; Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view; Fig. 3 is a detail of the end members; Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the line 4, 4, 1n
the accompany- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 5, 1908.
Patented Feb. 23, 1909. Serial No. 436,764.
Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a detail section, enlarged, on the line 5, 5, in Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a section of a modification taken on the plane of the dotted line 6, 6, in Fig.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
In the example illustrated my improved l hose supporter or garter comprises a plurality of members or strap -like parts, wherein 1 indicates an intermediate or back member and 2, 3, indicate end or front memhere, to one of which latter members a suitable hose fastener or clasp 4 is attached. The end members 2, 3, at their inner ends are pivotally or movably connected with the adjacent ends of the intermediate member 1, whereby the two end members may move up or down relatively to the intermediate member. I have shown said members in Fig. 5 as pivotally connected together by means of rlvets, which may be in the form of eyelets 5 with a suitable washer 6, and in Fig. 6 said members are shown ivotally and detachably connected by a Ball and socket or glove fastener 5, 5*, whereby the members are ke t in proper relation and are permitted relative pivotal action. Means are shown provided at the outer parts of members 2, 3, to detachably connect them together. For this purpose I have shown member 3 near the outer end provided with. a fastener or clasp 7,"shown of the class having a lever 7 a to grip the reduced end portion of end member 2 when passed through the fastener. Said fastener is shown pivotally connected with member 3 by an eyelet or rivet 8, whereby the fastener may swing up and down relatively to member 3. This arrangement provides also for a pivotal or movable connection between the end ortions of members 2, 3. Any other suitable or wellknown detachable fastening means between the end members 2, 3, may be provided if preferred.
The fastener 4, which may be any suitable or wellknown hose supporter, is shown attached to the lower end of a tab 3 that depends from member 3 near its free end. Fig. 1 shows tab 3 as Inade integral with member 3, and provided with an openin 3 In Fig. 2 the two side portions 3 of ta 3 are shown attached to member 3 by eyelets as, which may rovide a pivotal connection therefor, and ig. 3 illustrates tab 3' as attached to member 3 by stitches y. Opening 3* of tab 3' is so located that the end portion 2 of member .2 may be passed through said opening and retained in place by one of the parts 3". l have shown the opening 3* extended upwardly at 3 in member 3 in slotlike form adapted to receive the end portion 2 of member 2 to hold the same snugly, the part 3" thus lying over the strap portion 2 (Fig. 1) and the latter against the leg,the tab mrt 3" thus serving the added function of a l eeper for part 12.
Tue members of the garter may be made of leather or other suitable material, the garter being particularly adapted to be made from relatively non-elastic material. The arrangement is such that I am enabled to utilize to a considerable extent small pieces and scraps of leather left from cutting leather for other goods, whereby a saving may be effected in the cost of making the garter.
In using my improved garter it is fastened around the leg as illustrated in Fig. 1, with fastener 4 attached to the hose. The downward strain exerted on tab 3 tends to pull the end members 2, 3, downwardly, turning on their pivots 5, or 5, 5 without having material effect upon the intermediate member 1, whereby the garter is more or less shortened in the direction from front to rear, and thus is caused to automatically tighten around the leg to keep the garter from slipping down the leg, and thereby undue strain or tension around the leg is avoided in keeping the garter in place. By having tab 3* near the outer part of one of the end mem bers the latter is caused to swing downwardly on a relatively long radius from the pivotal point 5 or 5, and owing to the pivotal connection of member 3 with the outer portion of member 2, as at 8, the tendency will be to pull down the latter, and, furthermore, by reason of the ivotal or movable connection between members 2 and 3 the latter will automatically adjust themselves to the she e of the leg, all whereby a comfortable anr effective supporter or garter is provided. With the detachable pivotal connection 5, 5*, (Fig. 6} the garter may be unfastened between member 1 and members 2 and 3 without detaching the garter from the hose.
Having now described my invention what I claim is:
1. A hose supporter comprising an intermediate member and end members movably l mediate member and end members movably vided with an opening adapted connected therewith at corresponding ends, l one of said end members having a depending garment fastener independent of the other members, and means to detaehably connect said end members around a leg.
2. A hose supporter comprising an interconnected therewith at corresponding ends, one of said end members having a depending garment fastener independent of the other members, and a fastening device near the free end of one of said members having pivotal connection therewith.
3. A hose supporter comprising an intermediate member and end members pivotally connected therewith near corresponding ends, one of said members having a depending tab near the free end, a garment fastener carried by said tab, and means to detachably connect said end members together independent of the tab.
4. A hose supporter comprising a leg encircling portion having a depending tab pro to receive the free end of sair leg portion, a garment fas tener attached to the tab, and a fastener inof the tab attached to the leg endependent connect the circling portion to detachably supporter around the leg.
5. A hose supporter comprising a leg encircling )ortion having a depending tab provided with two side portions having a space between them, the leg encircling portion having a slot narrower tn an and communicating with said space, said space and slot being adapted to receive the free end of the leg a garment fastener attached to the portion,
connect the tab, and means to detachably supporter around the leg.
6. A hose supporter comprising a leg encircling ortion having a depending tab provided with an opening adapted to receive the free end of the leg portion, a garment fastener attached to the tab, and means to detachably connect the supporter around the Signed at New York city, New York, and State of New day of June, A.
