UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 24, 1 906.
Application filed December 29, 1905. Serial No, 293,748.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Luthersburg, in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invent ed certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in suspenders; and the invention has for its primary object the provision of novel means for securing a pair of suspenders to a pair of trousers or the like garment without the use of buttons or buttonholes.
My invention aims to provide novel means in connection with a pair of suspenders for fastening the suspenders to a pair of trousers should one of the buttons of the trousers become detached therefrom, and in this connection the auxiliary means which I employ for supporting trousers can also be used for supporting nether garments in connection with Briefly described, myinvention resides in using an ordinary pair of suspenders embodying adjustable shoulder-straps and providing the ends of said straps with detachable tabs having buttonholes formed therein and provided with clasps which may be used in lieu of the buttonholes.
The detail construction of my invention will be hereinafter more fully described, and, referring to the drawings accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout both views, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of suspenders constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is an edge View of one of the tabs carried by the suspenders.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a pair of conventional suspenders embodying adjustable shoulder straps 1 1, which are connected together, as at 2, forming rear depending ends 3 3. The forward adjustable ends 4 4 of the suspenders are provided with links 5 5, to which are detachably connected supporting-straps 6 6;
My invention resides in providing the ends of the supporting-straps 6 6 with links 7 7, and in each link I detachably mount a tab 8. Each tab consists of a strap having its one end provided with a buttonhole 9, while its opposite end is adapted to pass through the links 7 of the supporting-straps 6 and have its end provided with a clasp 10, said clasp being adapted to engage a pin 11, carried by the body portion of the tab. The clasp 10, together with the pin 11, conforms to the ordinary type of clasp commonly used in connection with gloves, the clasp portion 10 being adapted to engage the cone-shaped head 12 of the pin 11 and be held in engagement therewith until the clasp end of the tab is pulled outwardly from engagement with the pin 11. The rear depending ends 3 3 of the suspenders are provided with links 14 14, carrying tabs 15 15, similar to the tabs 8 8, but slightly larger than said tabs. In practice the clasp 10, together with the pin 1 1, is adapted to hold the tabs in engagement with the supporting-strap 6, while the buttonholes 9 are placed in engagement with buttons carried by a pair of trousers or the like garment. Should the button become detached from the trousers, the waistband 16 of the pair of trousers is moved upwardly and placed between the clasp 10 and the pin 11; but prior to this movement of the waistband the same is provided with an opening 17, whereby when it is moved it can be moved into engagement with a pin 11 to permit of the clasp 10 engaging the pin and firmly' holding the waistband the same as if a button were used.
In some instances the pins 11 of the tabs may be forced through the waistband of a pan of trousers without cutting an opening 1n the same, and the tabs when so used are simply employed as auxiliary means for su porting the trousers until the buttons which have become detached can be replaced.
It will be observed that the tabs are eX- tremely simple in construction, strong and durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and by slightly changing the depending ends 6 of the suspenders the tabs can be readily used.
Such changes in the construction. of my improved suspenders as are permissable by the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope 01. the invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a pair of suspenders having depending rear ends and supporting-straps, of links carried by said ends and said straps, tabs detachably mounted in said links, each tab consisting of a strap having a 3 and the supporting-straps ICC buttonhole formed in its one end, a pin carried by said tab, a clasp carried by the opposite end of said strap and adapted to engage said pin, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a pair of suspenders, of tabs carried by said suspenders, said tabs consisting of apiece of material having a buttonhole formed in its one end, a clasp carried by said tab and adapted to detach ably connect the tab to said suspenders, said clasp comprising two separable members, one attachedto the end of the tab, the other attached to the tab intermediate of its ends, substantially as described.
connecting the tabs of the suspenders, said means being adapted to connect the tabs to 20 trousers independently of said buttonholes.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. WRIGHT.
