SAMUEL LONDON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHIRT AND GARMENT SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed December 30,1904;- Serial No. 238,929.
To all whom, it ntcty concern.-
Be it known thatI, SAMUEL LONDON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shirt and Garment Support, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to shirts or shirtwaists, such as worn by small boys.
The object of the invention is to provide a garment of this kind with means for supporting the trousers in a resilient or elastic manner without recourse to suspenders.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indieate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front view of a garment with which my invention has been incorporated. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing a button of my invention which is used in connection with the garment. This view is partially broken away, as will appear. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the button shown in Fig. 2 and illustrating the manner in which the said button is attached. to an elastic band. Fig. 4: is a section through the button shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section through a portion of the body of a shirt at the waistband and illustrating the manner of attaching the waistband to the body.
Referring more particularly to the parts and especially to Fig. 1., 1 illustrates an undergarment or shirt, such as worn by a child beneath the blouse or shirt-waist. In its general construction this shirt is of common form. In applying my invention, however, I provide a waistband 2, which passes continuously about the body of the garment at or near the waistline. This waistband is preferably tacked to the material at suitable points 3. In this way the waistband is attached continuously around the garment so as to form free or loose straps 4 between the attached points, as will be readily understood. I reinforce the garment and waistband by means of inclined strips 5 of braid or similar material, which strips are securely sewed to the bosom of the shirt, as indicated. These strips 5 are preferably made These reinforcing-strips 0 not only prevent the waistband 2 from being torn away, but they also serve to distribute the forces incidental to supporting the trousers or breeches in such a manner as to prevent the garment from pulling tightly in vertical lines passing over the shoulders.
I providemeans for supporting the breeches or trousers from the waistband 2. To this end I provide a continuous belt 7, preferably of narrow elastic material, as indicated. At intervals upon this belt the buttons 8 are at tached. These buttons preferably consist of two disks 8 8, formed of leather or similar material. The two disks are normally superposed upon each other, as shown in Fig. 2, and they are each preferably provided with three alining openings 9, through which the elastic belt 7 is passed, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 3. In this figure the disks 8 8 are represented as pulled apart, as they could be by sutiicient force; but it should be understood that the strands 10 of the belt which are disposed between the two disks normally hold the disks closely superposed one upon the other.
In Fig. l I illustrate the manner in which the belt, together with the buttons, may be worn to support the trousers. When the belt is worn as illustrated, the belt would be passed about the body in a horizontal line above the waistband 2, and its ends would be attached together in any well-known manner. The portions of the belt 7 carrying the buttons would then be drawn down into the space between the straps i and the body of the shirt, so that the buttons would lie below the waistband. WVith this arrangement the portion of the belt 7 between the buttons 8 would be disposed in loops 11, which would be supported upon the lower extremities of the reinforcing-strip 5. The breeches would then be attached to the outer disks of the buttons, and the drawers would button to the inner disk. The connection to the shirt would evidently be very resilient, so as to adapt itself readily to activcmovements of the boys body. Evidently the buttons may give downwardly individually, and they may shift substantially longitudinally in any direction. Thus they will accommodate themselves to the circumstances. In attaching trousers to the buttons it should be understood that the outermost disk 8", as shown in Fig. 3, will be passed through the buttonhole in the trousers.
tinuousl y tliereabout and attached at intervals thereto, and a belt supported by said waistband and disposed in loops depending between the points of attachment of said waistband, and buttons carried by said loops and adapted to support a lower garment.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
