11o-ALL WHoM 1T MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, ALMA BEDFORD, et Goldwater, in the county of Branch, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Harness-Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.l
To enable-others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invention relates to harness-buckles, and consists in a novl mode of constructing the same, by placing u cross-bar in the rear bf the one to which the tongue is hinged", and inthe same plane with it,and also by placing a metallic loop over it, both for its protection as well us to receive the strap passing through the buckle.
In the 'drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my buckle, and
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section ot' 'thesame, showing the harness-straps connected toit.
In. the construction of my buckle, I muke'the-jaws A, tongue B, and oros's-bar'Q'to which the tongue is hinged, in any of the usual forms, except that I prefer to make a groove in the bar C,'so` that the tongue A:may not move laterally. The sides of the jaws A, I extend in thev rear of 'the eross-bar C, and curve them up, so that they may-be connected with a dat cross-piece D in such a. way as to form a. loop, as clearly shown in lig. 1. In the rear of the cross-bar C, I place another cross-bar, E, so as to be justounder the forward end of the loop D, and in the same plane with the cross-bar C. In this way the entire frame of the buckle, including the loop and cross-bars, is all rigidly connected tog-ether.
I connectv the harness-strap to my buckle by passingit around the cross-bar E and fastening it there. In moet buckles the strap is fastened rabout the bar' to which the tongue is hinged. This renders it necessary to cut away a. portion ofthe leather for the tongue, and thus weaken the strap. The location of the bar Eis such that the line of tension is directly in the line of the buckle. The position of the loop D not only serves to receive the end of the strap through which the tongue of the buckle passes, but also covers vand protects the cross-bar E, by which theybuekle is held, and presents a nesurface for stamping. or other ornamentation.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim, is Y vA harness-buckle, provided with the cross-bnr E and loop Dwhe n constructed as herein described, as a. new article of manufacture. l
