State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and. useful Improvements in Pliers, of

which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that Well-known class of combination-tools in which a slipjoint comprising a pivot fixed in one member and adapted to be moved in a slot in the other member is utilized to vary the capacity of the tool; and it consists in so forming the said members as to permit the providing of wire-cutting notches peripherally around said pivot and of the same being arranged to alternately register as the capacity of the jaws is changed.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal view of pliers closed. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal view of pliers opened, showing slip-joint at its enlarged point.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, in Fig. l the member a has a hole for its fulcrum-pivot below the nut e, and nipper-teeth and pipe-teeth are shown upon its jaws. In this view, d and c and h and 'i designate transverse diagonal slots, of which, in the position shown, d and c Fig. 3 shows the position of pivot in'which I p the wire-cutterd and c is not operative, but

in which slots h and a register, forming an operative wire-cutter. The enlarged capacity of the gripping parts is also shown.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

In a tool of the class described; the combination of a slip-joint, comprising a pivot fixed in one member,.and adapted to be moved in a slot in the other member, to vary the capacity of the tool; with wire-cutting slots in each member, arranged peripherally around said slip-joint, so as to alternately register when the capacity of the tool is changed.
