This invention relates tonew and useful improvements in tools and more particularly to the type known as'pliers, 'the'olij eet of the invention being'to provide atooliot the above char'aclt'er which is especially adapted for use "as a wire working tool for twisting and splic ngwi're.

Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 and 2 indicate the two outside handle portions of my improved pliers. which are formed adjacent their outer ends with the circular bearing members 3, said bearing members being pivotally connected bymeans or the transverse pin 4. The handles 2 are formed at their outer ends with the jaws 5 and 6 which are adapt-ed to be arranged in opposed relation and are suitably provided at their outer ends with the spaced clamping portions 7 said clamping portions being provided upon their inner faces with a knurled surface 8 so that wire or other material may be readily gripped between the clampii'ig portions and held against movenien't. The jaws 5 and 6 are provided'upon their inner fa'c'es'and adjacent the clamping portions 7 with "inwardly extending recesses 8:, a portion of the walls thereof being provided "with teeth, as shown at 9, said teeth being preferably arranged at the outer ends of the recesses.

adapted for the reception of a pyramidal shaped block 10 which is formed integral wit-lithe plates 11 and arranged between the outerends thereof. The plates 11 are preferably elongated inform and are pivotally mounted'at their intermediate portions upon the'ends of the pivot pin 4. The inner ends of the plates 11 project beyond the circular portions 3 and are disposed between the handle members 1 and 2. a second handle lmeinb-er being arranged between the inner ends of the plates and secured thereto by means of the rivets 12. The second handle "ineniber which is arranged between the in- "ne'rends of thepl'ates 11 is adapted to be operated to actuate the ramidalshaped block 10. Thus, when it is desired to place two separate wires within the recesses 8,
upon "opposite sides of th'eblock, one of the wires is first placed in position and the handle 'lne'nibe'r "a ctuated toengage the block with the wire, so as to retain the same in the recess until the other wire has been placed within the second recess in the opposite side of the block. It will also be apparent that a loop formed by placing two ends of wire can be readily removed from the block and when pulling power is applied to either one of the wires. the loop formed will be closed by the strain upon the wire.
The jaws 5 and 6 are provided adjacent the circular portions with grooves 13 which space the circular portions 3 from the opposing jaws 5 and 6. It will be apparent that in splicing wire, the ends thereof are inserted between the clamping portions 7 each. end being disposed upon opposite sides of the triangular block 10. one end extending out through one of the recesses 8 upon one side of the tool. and the other end extending out through the recess upon the opposite side. Thus upon turning movement of the pliers. the ends of the wires will be each twisted around the opposite wire, leaving a space between the wires, as illustrated by the that the ends of the wires may be ordinarily twisted together by simply engaging the ends of the Wires in a crOsS position between the clamping portions 7 and rotating the 1 pliers.
In Figs. el and (3, Ihave illustrated a slightly modified form of the invention wherein the clamping members 7 are provided at their ends with the grooved portions 8 adapted to receive the ends of the wires when they are inserted between the clamping portions in a crossed position, as illustrated in Fig. a. In this form of the invention, it will be apparent that the same is to be used in merely twisting the wire, as illustrated in Fig. 7. It will be apparent that the ends of the wires may be readily twisted in the manner shown in Fig.7 by inserting the ends within the grooves 8 in a crossed position, as shown in Fig. 4, and imparting turning movement to the pliers.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readilyapparent that I have provided a simple and durable tool whereby various forms and sizes of wire may be quickly and readily twisted, or the ends thereof quickly spliced together. It will also be apparent that the clamping portions 7 of my improved pliers may be readily used for various other purposes to which they may be applicable.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention mto practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from 40 the scope of the appended claims.
What-I claim is l. A device of the class described including handle members, circular members formed on said handles adjacent their outer ends, a pivot pin extending through the center of said circular members to pivotally connect the handles, jaw members formed integral with the circular portions and ar ranged 1n opposed relation, said aws bemg 50 formed upon their inner faces with'recesses which are adapted to form a substantially triangular-shaped cavity when the jaws are in their closed position, plates arranged upon opposite sides of the circular portions and mounted for pivotal movement upon said pin, a triangular-shaped block formed between the outer ends of said plates and arranged within said cavity, and a handle member arranged between and connected to the inner ends of said plates. 7

A device of the class described includ ing handle members having opposed jaw portions formed upon the outer ends and provided with recesses, a triangularlyshaped block arranged within the recesses of the jaws, spaced plates formed integral therewith and arranged upon opposite sides of the aws, and a handle member arranged between and connected to the inner ends of said plates, as and for the purpose set forth.
