Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 17, 1915.
Application filed April 17, 1914. Serial No. 832,448.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM DANNEN- BERG, a citizen of Germany, residing at Elmore, in the county of Faribault and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spike-Pullers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spike pullers and its object is to produce a device of this class that is simple in construction, positive in action and that is cheap to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention. consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of said specification and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the spike puller. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view, partly in section, taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. I
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views. I V
The reference numeral 1 indicates a standard secured to a base 2 and upon said standard a lever or draw bar 3 operates which at one end carries a pin 4 that is seated in the jaws 5, 5' that are tapered at one extremity to engage the head of the spike. The jaws are formed with male and female members 6, 7 respectively, which are pivoted together by a pin 8. Between the members 6, 7 and the tapered end of the jaws a staple 9 is passed through one jaw 5 and is terminally embedded in the jaw 5. The jaw 5 is movable over, or independently of, the said staple. Upon the staple 9 is pivoted a cam lever 10, which is capable of contact with the jaw 5 and by means of said cam lever the movement of said jaws with relation to each other may be limited and when the jaws have obtained a purchase upon a spike the cam lever will operate to prevent slipping of the jaws.
To set the jaws about the head of a spike the jaws are lowered into engagement with the spike by means of the draw bar 3 working over standard 1, the cam lever 10 is then rotated upon its pivot away from the jaw 5 until a sufiicient spread of the jaws is possible to encompass the spike head; the jaws are now placed in engagement with the spike and the cam lever moved back into engagement with jaw 5 to prevent slipping, and the draw bar is depressed, at its handle portion, to raise the jaws and extract the spike.
hat is claimed is A device of the type described, including jaws having spacedapart shanks, said shanks being provided with inter-fitting 'pivotally connected members at right angles to said shanks, means for causing the obj ectengaging ends of said jaws to exert a clamping action upon the object, a fulcrum-pin extending through apertures in said jawshanks with end enlargements seated in said apertures, and a lever with one end pivotally connected to said fulcrum pin of said jawshanks.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
