COMBINATION-TOOL.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN E. ARTHUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lane, in the county of Dewitt and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in combination tools and the object is to'provide in a single device a plurality of tools useful and adaptable for various purposes.

An important. object of thisinvention is the provision of a nail puller adapted to extract nails without damage thereto or to the parts secured thereby. r

A further object includes the provision of means for stretching and wrapping wire, setting nails for driving, removing staples, cleats, etc., driving screws, pulling tacks and also including a wrench for removing tops of cans, particularly oil-cans and serving as a pipe wrench.

Other objects include improvements in details of structure and arrangement whereby a tool or device suitable .and desirable for use by black-smiths, farmers, carpenters, householders and in fact any artisan or mechanic. U

To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and then sought to be defined in the appended claims, reference being made to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof and which shows for the purposeof illustrative disclosure, apreferred embodiment of my invention, it being understood that various changes may be made in practice within the scope of the claims without digressing from my inventive idea.

the other. These parts are pivoted together by means of the bolt or rivet 4 and have the sultable. stops or abutments 5, whereby the relative movements of the parts are limited. It is to be noted that these arms or handles '1 and 2 are crossed, so that opening the handle portions will open the head portion of the tool.

r The head or operating portion of the arm 2 is provided with the hammer head 6 havlng the claw portion 7, this claw being provided with the outwardly beveled notch 8. This head or operating portion is extended from the hammer head in the form of a jaw 9,having a curved bearing portion 10 thereb'et'ween. This jaw 91s provided with the cut-out portion 11 to receive the gripping member, shown in the form of the inset 12, this latter member being shown in detail in Fig. 5, and being made preferably of a very tough steel. It has the edge flanges 13, which are serrated as at 14 for a portion of their length. Its outer end is provided with a V-shaped notch or cut 15 which flares toward and extends partially across said edge flanges 13. The outer and lower corners of this end of the members are beveled off as at 16, whereby the sharp gripping points 17 and edges 18; are provided at the entrance to said slot 15. 'This member is secured within the cut-out portion 11 by means of the rivet or'similar fastenend is 'cut away to provide the shoulders 20 against which said inset member 12 is adapted to engage when the toolis inits closed position, to prevent injury to the edges of said inset member 12, These shoulders are provided on each side of the stop or anvil member 21 which is tri-angular j in cross-section, having its side faces flaring outwardly from the inner edge 22 and having the prominent point or projection 23. As stated above, this part cooperates withthe inset member 12 of arm 1, the inneredge 22 thereof'being adapted to enter the slot 15 in said inset member when the parts are in closed position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Itis tobe noted that the other end of-the' handles are provided with a screw driving member 24: and the tack pulling member 25. This is for the purpose of adding to the general utility ofthe tool.

In describing the various uses of this device, I will refer first to the most important use, that of pulling nails, which is illustrated in Fig. 4E. The

1 and 2 are spread apart and the tool held so that the inset member is positioned to the rear of the nail with the sharp ends 17 pointed downwardly. The stop or anvil member 21 is positioned against the edge of the box in line with the nail, and then the handle members are forced together. This causes the inset member 12 to bite into the box and grip the nail in the V-shaped slot 15, the stop or anvil member 21 cooperating to provide the necessary resistance, the edge 22 and prominent point or projection 23 biting into the edge of the box and holding the nail in the Vshaped slot 15. It is to be noted that the point 21 extends beyond the under edge of the V-shaped notch or cut 15 in the inset member 12 when the parts of the head are closed together. The nail issecurely gripped between the stop or anvil member and the walls of the slot 15, and by rocking the tool on the bearing portion 26, the nail is readily removed, without damage thereto or to the parts which had been secured thereby. The device acts efficiently on nails with or without a head. These same parts are capable of use as an eflicient wire stretcher, the wire being placed and held between the top edge of the inset member 12 and the shoulder or abutment 20. Sufficient pressure may be applied to the handle members to hold the wire securely or to permit the same to pay out gradually. Sufficient leverage is obtained by positioning the bearing portion 10 against a fence-post or other suitable support or member and by turning the tool thereabout, the wire is stretched as taut as desired. similarly operated to wrap broken parts such as shafts, etc., with wire, sufficient pressure being obtained to embed the wire in the wood. These same parts are also useful as o a. nail setting implement, the nail being held between the edge of the inset portion 12 and one of the shoulders or abutments 20. The nail is set by a blow and then released, and the driving is then completed by the hammer head.

'As stated before, I provide a wrench, particularly for the purpose of removing tops of oil cans, the head portions of the

1 and 2 being so shaped as to embrace the top. That is the purpose of serrating the flanges 13 of the inset member 12'. The tool is used as an ordinary pipe wrench and by having the two gripping portions for the wrench spaced apart, the thread of the top of the can will not be damaged by the grip, as these parts will fit in the grooves thereof. The hammer head 6 provides means-for driving nails, etc.,.and the claw portion of This'part of the device may be cleats and particularly, pulling out staples, this latter advantage being obtained by bevcling the outside of the claw portion of the head instead of the inside as is customary.

lVhile I have specified some instances of uses for this tool, it is obvious that there are numerous other ways in which it is capable of being used. It is simple and strong in construction, attractive in appearance and easy to operate, forminga desirable adjunct to a tool kit.

What I claim is 1. A tool including a pair of arms pivoted together and having handle portions and head portions, the head portion of one of said arms having a gripping member provided with a slot, the head portion of the other of said arms having .a stop or anvil member adapted to cooperate with said gripping member and to enter said slot to engage an article, said gripping member having edge flanges, which are beveled on both their outer and inner sides to provide biting point.

2. A tool including a pair of arms pivoted together and having handle portions and head portions, the head portion of one of said arms having a gripping member provided with a slot, the head portion of the other of said arms having a stop or anvil member adapted to cooperate with said gripping member and to enter said slot to en gage an article, the outer ends of said gripping member being beveled to provide a sharp point and edge' on each side of the entrance to said slot. 2

8. A tool including a pair of arms pivoted together and having handle portions and head portions, the head portion of one of said arms having a gripping member provided with a slot, the head portion of the other of said arms having a stop or anvil member adapted to cooperate with said gripping member and to enter said slot to engage an article, said gripping member having edge flanges spaced apart, said slot be ing beveled and the ends of said gripping member beveled to provide a sharp end point and extended edge on each side of the entrance to said slot.

A tool for pulling nails including a pair of armspivo-ted together and having handle portions and head portions, the head portion of one of said arms having a gripping member provided with a slot and having sharp points on either side of the entrance to the slot to bite into the material in which the nail is embedded on each side of the shank of the nail, the head portion of the other of said arms having a stop or the material and beneath the nail head and to enter said slot to engage the nail, said stop or anvil member being triangular in horizontal cross section and having a prominent point or projection, the inner edge of the stop or anvil member being adapted to enter the slot when the parts are in closed or gripping position to hold the nail in engagement with the gripping member.

5. A tool for pulling nails including a pair of arms pivoted together and having handle portions and head portions, the head portion of one of said arms having a gripping member provided with a slot, and having sharp points on either side of the entrance to the slot to bite into the material in which the nail is embedded on each side of the shank of the nail, the head portion of the other of said arms having a stop or anvil member positioned at substantially right angles to the gripping member when the head portions are closed together and adapted to cooperate with said gripping member to force the gripping member into the material and beneath the nail head and to enter said slot to engage the nail, said stop or anvil member being triangular in horizontal cross section and having a prominent'point or projection, the inner edge of the stop or anvil member being adapted to enter the slot when the parts are in closed or gripping position to hold the nail in engagement with the gripping member, said stop or anvil member also having shoulders with which said gripping member is adapted to engage.

6. A tool including a pair of arms pivoted together and having handle portions and head portions, the head portion of one of said arms having a gripping member provided with a slot, the head portion of the other of said arms having a stop or anvil member adapted to cooperate with said gripping member and to enter said slot to engage an article, said gripping member hdV. ing edge flanges spaced apart, said slot being beveled and the ends of said gripping member beveled to provide a sharp end point andextended edge on each side of the entrance to said slot, said stop or anvil member having an edge and a point and also shoulders adapted to engage said flanges to protect the points and edges.

7. A tool including a pair of arms pivoted together, and having handle portions and head portions, the head portions of one of said arms having a gripping'member provided with a slot and sharp gripping points at the entrance to said slot, the head portion of the other of said arms having a stop or the gripping member when the parts are in closed position.

8. A tool including a pair of arms pivoted together and having handle portions and head portions, the head portion of one of said arms having a gripping member, said gripping member having spaced edge flanges and also having a V-shaped slot or notch in its outer end, the walls of said slot or notch being beveled and the outside end portions of said gripping member being beveled so as to provide edges at an inclination to the vertical terminating in sharp gripping points, the head portion of the other of said arms having a stop. or anvil member adapted to cooperate with said gripping member and to enter said slot or notch to engage an article, said stop or anvil member having an edge terminating in the sharpened point which extends beyond the lower edge of the gripping member when the parts are in closed position.

9. A tool including a pair of arms pivoted together and having handle portions and head portions, the head portion of one of said arms having a gripping member 12, said gripping member having a V-shaped slot or notch 15, and having the beveled end portions 16, whereby the sharp gripping points 17 and edges 18 are provided at the entrance to said slot, the head portion of the other of said arms having a stop or anvil member 21, having the inner edge 22 terminating in the prominent point or projection 23, the inner edge 22 being adapted to enter the slot 15 when the parts are in 1 closed position.
