SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,902, dated November 28, 1899.
Application filed September 9, 1898A Serial No. 690,605- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. S.PERY,a oi tizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Fastening Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is the production of a tool for clamping and holding the severed ends of a belt and directing the course of the fastening-staples which are driven through the leather to join the ends together.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of my belt-fastening tool, showing it clamped upon and holding together the severed ends of the belt, showing also three of the fastening-staples driven into place and clenched in the leather. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the clamping device, showing the hand tool or punch for driving the fastening-staple into position.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A is the lower member of the belt-clamping device.
A is a squaring-bar fixed to the member A at one end thereof and extending at right angles thereto. The clamping member A has two parallel grooves A formed in its upper face and extending the greater portion of its length. They are intended to turn the point of the staple-fastening to clench the same.
A are two rows of pointed pins fixed with relation to the lower clamping member A for engaging the ends of the belt and holding them in position while the clamping device is being adjusted.
A A are two clamping-screws and thumbnuts pivotally secured to the lower member A near to the ends thereof.
.13 is the upper member of the clamping device, having the longitudinal opening Band the transverse recesses B for receiving the fastening -staples. The end of this upper clamping member, which is engaged by the clamping-screw A is slotted to permit the withdrawal of said screw in order that the said upper member may be tilted back upon the pivot of the clamping-screw A 0 is a handtool, having somewhat the same form as a cold-chisel, for driving the fasteningstaples through the belt.
D are the severed ends of the belt.
E are the fastening-staples of the usual form.
In operation the upper member B of the clamping device is turned backward upon the pivotal bearing of the clamping-screw A and the ends of the belt are brought squarely together on the sharp points A and directly above the lower member A of the clamping device. The upper member B is then forced down upon the ends of the belt by the clamping-screws A A and the severed ends are thereby held firmly together end to end. The clamp is now placed upon some solid support and the staple belt-fasteners E inserted in the transverse recesses B The hand-tool O is inserted in said recesses and by blows upon the upper end of the said tool the staples are driven through the leather, and after penetrating this and striking in the grooves A their points are turned upward, again entering the belt-leather as the driving proceeds and becoming firmly clenched therein.
The squaring bar A also answers as a square by which the belt is marked when cutting out portions of the length thereof in shortening it.
I claim as my invention-- 1. In a belt-fastening tool, in combination, a clamping device comprising two members, one of which members is provided with a longitudinal opening and transverse recesses for receiving the fastening device and the other clamping member is grooved to clench the said fastening device, su bstantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a belt-fastening tool, in combination, a clamping device comprising two members, one of which members is provided with a longitudinal opening and transverse recesses for receiving the fastening device, the other clamping member being grooved to clench the said fastening device, and two pivoted clampingscrews for the clamping device, substan* tially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a belt-fastening tool, in combination, a clamping device comprising two members, one of which members is provided with a longitudinal opening and transverse recesses for receiving the fastening device, said clamping member also having an opening at one of its ends and a slotted opening at its other end, the other clamping member having a longitudinal groove to clench the said fastening device, and two clamping-screws having pivotal connection with the last-mentioned clamping member, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a belt-fastening tool, in combination, a clamping device comprising two members between which the belt is held, the lower member having a truing-up bar extending at right angles to its length and projecting above its upper surface.
5 In a belt-fastening tool, in combination aclamping device comprising two members between which the belt is held, one of said members being provided with a longitudinal opening for receiving the fastening devices and the other member grooved to clench the fastening devices and provided with a liningup bar extending at right angles to its length and projecting above its upper surface.
6. In a belt-fastening tool, in combination, a clamping device comprising two members, one of which members is provided with a longitudinal opening for receiving the fastening CHARLES F. SPERY.
