Description

Patented Aug. 14, 1945 WRECKING BAR Michael Tabellione, Meriden, Conn.
Application (Pctober 19, 1944, Serial No. 559,384
3 Claims.
This invention relates to mechanics tools, and more particularly to a combination tool which may be used as a wrecking bar, nail extractor, shingle remover, etc., and which is' especially adapted for use in railroad construction Work.
One object of the present invention is to provide a tool of the above nature which will be ideal for pulling heavy spikes or nails withoutbending the nails, and in which the weight of the tool and the curved base of the tool facilitates the nail-pulling operations.
A further object is to provide a tool of the above nature having an elongated handle section and a substantially semi-circular open bottom frame provided with a llat central section having a nail-embracing aperture.
A further object is to provide a device of the above nature in which said bottom frame has a pair of nail-pulling slots at its upper ends, a single nail pulling slot at its central section, and in which said handle is provided with a claw on the upper end thereof, thus providing, live separate points at which nails may be extracted.
A further object is to provide a combination wrecking bar and nail-puller of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance, and Very eiiicieni; and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 represents a front View of the combina' tion tool in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the same.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 4 4 of Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken along the line 5-5 of Fig, 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the lower portion of the bottom frame as it appears when the tool is being used for extracting a nail from a oor.
Referring now to the drawing in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral I0 indicates an elongated tapered handle, preferably rectangular in cross section and converging toward the top. The handle I0 has an inclined top end I I, which is provided with a pair of sharp teeth I2, I3 forming a top nail-pulling claw.
At the bottom of the handle I0, provision is made of an open substantially semi-circular frame I4 comprising a pair of curved concave side top sections I5, I6 between which is a V.shaped slot Il which may also be used as a nail-pulling claw, said slot II having a beveled circular edge I8 The frame I4 has a pair of upturned points I9, 20 at the extremities of the curved side sections I5, I6 said points terminating in a pair of sharp V-shaped claws 2I, 22 as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
At the bottom end of the frame I4, provision is made of a pair of convex lower sections 23, 24,
which are connected together by a ilat base 25, the junction between said base and said sections 23, 24 having rounded shoulders 26, 2'I.
At the central portion of the flat base 25, provision isV made of a circular nail-embracing aperture 28 having a pair of wedge-shaped V- slots 29, 30 at the sides thereof.
Operation In operation, when it is desired to use the combination tool for extractingnails or spikes, the pulling teeth I2, I3, the V-shaped claw I1, the V-shaped claws 2l, 22, or the central aperture '28 may be inserted underneath the nail or spike to be removed, and the tool may then be manipulated with a powerful leverage to remove the nail or spike without bending the latter.
One advantage of the present invention is that the bottom frame I4 may be also used as a. hammer to drive a nail into the floor or other article, if so desired.
While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specic disclosure, but may be modiiied and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes al1 the modications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described they invention,
' what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:
l. In a combined nail-puller and wrecking bar, an elongated handle, a substantially semi-circular open bottom frame connected to the lower end of said handle, said frame having a pair of upturned side nail-pulling claws at the upper end thereof, and a central nail-pulling claw at the junction of said handle with said frame, said frame also having a flat apertured base including a V-shaped interior nail-pulling claw.
2. In a combined nail-puller and wrecking bar, a, handle, an open frame connected to the lower end of said handle, said frame having a central nail-pulling claw at the junction of said handle with said frame, said frame also having a nat apertured base provided with an interior beveled V-shaped side slot forming a nail pulling claw provided with a shoulder at one side thereof to form a fulcrum for said tool when said interior nail-pulling claw is being used.
3. In a combined nail-puller and wrecking bar, a handle, an open frame connected to the lower end of said handle, said frame having a central nail-pulling claw at the junction of said handle with said frame, said frame also having a hat apertured base provided with a pair of opposed interior nail-pulling claws, said base being provided with rounded shoulders at the sides thereof to form fulcrums for said tool when said in- 10 terior claws are being used for nail-pulling,
