To ALL WHOM IT MAY coroner; Y
Be it known that I. THOMAS C. Cousfrocmof I-Iarrodsbnrg, in the county of Mercer, and State of Kentucky,
' have invented a new and improved Nail-Drawer and Hammer; and'I do hereby declare that the following is n full, eleiir, and eilact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the artfto make anduse the some, reference being had to'the'occompanying drawings,-forming a part of this specification, in whicha l Figure 1 is a perspective yiew of my nail-drawer and haminer. z a \i Figure 2 is asection through the line a w, fig. 1. i Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. v l I This invention is a nail-drawing deviceyhaving other implements combined in the same tool} It consists of tho -goneral parts shown in. the drawing at A, B, G, D, E, F;- W H, J, and O, forming the handles, hammers, fulcrum-nose, Beaks, wrench, channel or hole, and joint-bearing, and th rty he made of any o the metals cominonly used for tools, though in practice it is constructed of steel and iron. 1
.The two main parts of this tool lire jointedandpiroted together he shown in the drawing, these two parts 7 being halved into. each other, undone olthem is provided with a circular cheek, J, fittedinto the otherfgeneral part liy a circular boaring 1' fr, hi2, thus giving a greater degree of strength to sustain any strain that may be brought on the tool, On the upper and rear ,of the part 0 is a. hammer, C, to admit the mail when being drawn. The fulerurn-noseD is formed downward, reaching nearly to thelevel of the points of the beaks, \v on the tool is held; horizontal. The rectangular recess W, i'ornl'ed between the fulcrum-nose D and the beak is for use as a common wrench. A screw-driver, G, is formed upon the end of the handle A. The inner facesof the beaks E F ere corrugated, to obtain a firmholdof the nail to bedrawn. v V r I v In using this tool, the beaks are-slightly opened, and the pointsof said beaks sire placed at each-side of the nail-head, and the hammer c struck with another hammer or mallet, when the heak s'jwill be forced down at each side of the nail-head, thus permitting-it to be grasped by the beaks. It needs only tobe driven u. very shorit distnnce'to ohtainthis hold. ,The handleshre' then raised,'end this action brings thofulcrum-nose D to act as a fulcrum, and permitsa leverage upon the nail.
successive repetition of the operation of lifting and noving the necks further down, taking a new hold.
on the nailiis'ell that is required in the extraction of the most firmly-embedded nail, for the suidchannel H,
extending upward through the part O of the tool,'\vhich, as before mentioned, admits the nail. j'l his channel-j commences front between the limits, andterminatos ht thenp-pcr surface of the part 0, just in front of the-hemf nier C, nnd'its course is shown in fig. 1 by the dotted 'lincsfl d. It is formed mostly in the part0, though a. small'port-ion of the circular disl: J is cut away to form a small portion of it; I t is by means ofthis channel th at'a succession of drawings can be made upon a long nail, oron onetlm't i's-diflicnlt to ertrnctf, The. channel is niude'soinewhnt larger than the large nails, to admit of a lifting motion of the tool..
The adrnntagcs of this-invention consist in the thorough and certain performance of the operation ofdranw ing nails, and no matter howlong ;are the nails, or hon-tough 'nnd hard the wood holding them; they can be extractedwitliout breaking lay-this tool.
This quality, together with the auxiliary attachment beforenientioned, renders, it e'm'ost'usct ul implementfor householduso, as \rell as being unavailable and c'onrenie'nt tool in the workshop. 1
Ha ving thus describedmy invention, what I claim as new, enddesire to secure'by Letters Putent is-- 1. Theron-drawer and liizminer, constructed as described, its handle B provided with thc'hcek E and fulcrum-nose D, formingthe wrench W, and also provided with the vertical opening I I, for the passage of the nail being druw'n, and the handle Arliaving the sharpened vertical jaw F, all arranged as described; for the purpose specified. I
2i The nail-dran'elxand hnmmerp when providedwith the beek D, jaws E F, opening HQ-hnrnmer G, screrrdriver G, and tack-tl1'awer1',all constructod'and arrange-fl as herein shown and described.
