Description
J. C. 'HODGES. Grub-Puller.
No. 216,090.A Patented June 3,1879.
FIGS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE. j
JAMES C. HODGES, OF MORRISTOWN, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO ENOGH G. BRUCE AND LEVI N. BRUCE, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRUB-PULLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,090, dated June 3, 1879; application filed April 21, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. HoDGEs, of Morristown, in the county of Hamblen and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grub-Pullers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of hand grub-pullers having twojaws pivoted together, and adapted to be applied and operated by a single handle or lever.
It consists in having the jaws extended laterally, and in having a stationary or fixed fulcrum, to which one of the jaws is pivoted, while the other j aw has affixed to it the handle or lever, all of which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figures l and 2 are side elevations, showing the operation, and Fig. 3
is an end view of a grub-puller constructed according to my invention.
a and b are the jaws, the arms ot' which are curved and pivoted together at c, as shown. They are extended laterally, as shown at d d, Fig. 3, so that they may be applied to the grub and at the same time maintain the handle and fulcrum in a vertical plane. The edges of the jaws are provided with teeth d d', to give them greater holding power.
To the arm of jaw a I aiiix the handle a', by which the device is operated. To the end of the arm of jaw b I fix by a hinged joint the fulcrum e, which is constructed with a broad base, c', which rests on the ground, and gives steadiness and firmness to the position of the puller.
The operation of the device is clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The fulcrum c is placed in a vertical position, with its base resting firmly on the ground, and so that the jaws a and b will be brought on opposite sides and near to the root of the grub, as shown in Fig. 1. By pulling the handle a back over the fulcrum the jaws will grasp and pull the grub from the earth, as shown in Fig. 2. Y
In this device the fulcrum remains iixed on. the spot where first placed, and an extended sweeper movement is given to the jaws, so that grubs having long roots may be lifted entirely from the earth. The puller can be lifted and carried by the handle to any desired spot.
Having described my invention, 1 claim- The hereindescribed grub-puller, composed of the jaws a and b, extended laterally, and having their arms pivoted together and provided with a handle, a', aftixed to the arm of jaw a, and the stationary fulcrum c, constructed with the base c', and having the end of the arm of jaw b pivoted or hinged to its upper end, substantially as and for the purposesset forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES O. HODGES.
Witnesses I. H. (DATE, SAMUEL M. FURRAR.
