To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMns O. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, haveinvented a new and useful Pipe-Lifting Device, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to devices for lifting or elevating pipes, polish rods, and the like, out of wells, and it is the object of the invention to provide'a novel and improved contrivance of that character which is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction, as well as being thoroughly practical and eflicient in use.
With the foregoing and other ob ects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being .understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

In carrying out the invention, there is provided a'suitable base 1 adapted to rest upon the ground over the well, and having a recess 2 at one side for receiving the pipe 3 projecting out of the well when the base 1 i is slid upon the ground over the well. This base 1 is provided with a pair of relatively short and long standards t'and 5, respectively, at the opposite sides of the recess or opening 2, and an actuating lever 6 is ful erumed to the upper end of each standard and has a relatively short inner arm and a relatively long outer arm. The inner arms of the levers carry the gripping members for engaging the pipe.
The gripping members are applied to the inner arms of the levers by means of pairs of links 7 pivoted at their upper ends to the inner ends of the levers, and the shanks 8 of the gripping members or forks 9 are pivoted between the lower ends of the pairs of links 7. The arms or limbs of each fork 9 are curved and diverge from one another at an acute angle so as to straddle or stand astride the pipe 3, and the limbs of the forks are provided adjacent their free ends with slots 10 through which transverse bars 11 are slid. Those edges of the bars 11 nearest the crotches of the forks 9 are beveled, as at 12, to provide sharp biting edges for engaging the pipe, the forks 9 projecting in opposite directions whereby the bars 11 engage opposite sides of the pipe.
Each of the bars 11 is provided adjacent one end. with an aperture 13 through which a ring 14 is engaged, and a cord or flexible element 15 connects the ring 14 and the respective standard, whereby when the bars 11 are removed from the forks, they are not liable to be misplaced or lost. Pins or retainingelements 16 of any suitable character are engaged with the other ends of the bars 11 for holding them assembled with the forks 9, the retaining elements 16 being removable to allow the bars 11 to be withdrawn.
In operation, after the base 1 is moved to position so that the pipe 3 is received by the recess 2, the gripping members are applied to the pipe. This is readily accomplished, when the bars 11 are removed, since the forks 9 can be swung astride the pipe from the opposite sides, and after which the bars 11 are reapplied to the forks 9, thus confining the pipe between the bars 11 and crotches of the forks. The links 7 allow the forks 9 to swing downwardly, whereby the forks assume oblique or inclined positions with the sharp edges of the bars engaging opposite sides of the pipe. The upper lever 6 carried by thestandard 5 is preferaby actuated, either manually or mechanically, for raising the pipe. When the long upper arm of the upper lever 6 is swung downwardly, the shortinner arm is raised, thereby raising the upper fork 9, the shank of said upper fork being raised first, so that the pipe is tightly gripped between the bar 11 of the outer fork and the upper edges of the curved diverging limbs of-said fork. The pipe will therefore be raised with the fork 9, and the pipe may move upwardly readily through the lower fork 9, since the free portion of the lower fork 9 which carries the bar 11 can move upwardly without binding the pipe within the lower fork or gripping I member. When the upper fork or grippingmember 9 is lowered to take a new hold upon the pipe, the pipe is held raised by the lower fork or gripping member 9 due to the binding action between the limbs of the fork and bar 11, this binding or gripping action being the same as with the upper fork or gripping member. The upper fork canslide downwardly easily upon the pipe when saidfork is lowered, and when the upper fork reaches its lowermost position, it obtainsa new hold upon the pipe, in order that when the upper fork is; again raised, it will elevate the pipe another step. The operation is repeated or continued until the pipe is elevated out of the well the required amount.
The gripping members areof especial advantage sinoe they can be readily applied to and removed from the pipe, and since-they efficiently perform their functions.
The device may not only be used-for lifting pipes out of wells, but may be used. for lifting'orpulling' pipes, rods, and the like, generally for various purposes. If desired,
the two levers 6 can be swung alternately for 1 raising the pipe quicker.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
Ina device of the character described, a fork having diverging limbs arranged at an acute angle with one another and provided with slots adjacent their free ends, a bar slipped. through said slots and disposed in the plane of the fork, said bar having an upwardly facing bevel providing a sharp edge cooperating with the limbs of said fork to grip an object passed through the fork, an; actuating lever, a link connecting said lever and shank of the fork, and means'engaging saidbar to hold it in place.
