FENCE-POST FULLER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OLE OLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canby, in the county of Yellow Medicine and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Post Pullers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to fence post pullers, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a simple device which will operate quickly for pulling posts of different diameters, and in which a lever is used provided with a chain which surrounds the post and in which the lever during the upward movement of the outer end or handle will take a new bite or hold on the post automatically when the chain has been adjusted properly around the post.

Another object of the invention is to pro vide a fence post puller of strong, durable construction which can be taken apart and packed in a small compass to occupy but little room when not required for use.

The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which v Figure 1 is a top plan view of a fence post puller made in accordance with this invention and shown connected to a post, the latter being shown in section,

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a standard secured to a base 2 and at its upper end being screw threaded as at 3. Removably secured to the screw threaded portion of the standard 1 is a U- shaped bearing member 4 comprising two spaced members, and between said memhers is a lever 5 pivoted upon a bolt 6 extending through the spaced members and through the lever. The lever 5 is provided with an enlarged portion 7 at the pivotal point of the same, and at the pro ecting ends, said lever is provided with an aperture 8. A chain 9 extends through the Specification of Letters Patent.

aperture 8 and around a post 10, said chain being adjustable around the post by means of a grab hook 9. The lever extends some distance in rear of the standard 1 and is provided with a suitable handle 12.

The manner of operating the fence post puller may be briefly described as follows:

One end of the chain 9 is passed through the opening 8 from that side of the lever 5 to which the key 11 is secured, after which the key is engaged with the link nearest such side of the lever to secure the chain to the lever with one or more links of the chain on the opposite side of the lever. If the posts to be ulled are of the maximum diameter or thic mess, one link only is positioned on the opposite side of the lever 5, and after the chain 9 has been passed about one of the posts the hook 9 is engaged with this link. If the posts to be pulled are of a smaller diameter or of less thickness, the chain 9 is secured to the lever 5 to position two or more links on the opposite side of the lever 5, and the hook 9 is engaged with the link nearest such side of the post after the chain 9 has been passed about the post. The number of links positioned upon the opposite side of the lever 5 depends upon the diameter or thickness of the post to be pulled. It will thus be seen that the chain 9 may be so secured to the lever 5 as to permit it to be readily and quickly connected about posts of dillerent diameters or thicknesses and as readily and quickly disconnected from the posts. Inasmuch as it is only necessary to engage the hook 9 with that link of the chain adjacent one side of the lever 5, the chain will not have to be adj ustcd with relation to the lever after it has been passed about the post to cause it to snugly engage the post. It should be apparent that the chain may be so connected to the lever as to permit it to fit about posts of a certain diameter or thickness by merely engaging the hook 9 with a certain link located on and adjacent to a certain side of the lever. Upon a downward movement of the handle 12 the post will be pulled tightly from the ground and as the handle 12 is raised, the chain will drop upon the post and take a new bite, so that when the lever is depressed at the handle end 12 a second time the post will be pulled out from the ground and loosened so that one or two more bites will remove the post from the ground.

lVhen it is desired to pack the fence post puller for shipping or when not required for use, the standard 1 may be removed'from the bearing member packed in a small compass.
