To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, SEswoRTH G. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Russell, in the county of Russell and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Pipe-Clamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
This invention relates to pipe clamps for withdrawing well casings from drill holes and for other like purposes, and has reference more particularly to a device of the class described, which comprises a body 4formed to receive a pipe or the like, a gripping member movably and adjustably associated with the body, and means for applying a pull to the device, whereby the' 'gripping member becomes operative relative to the pipe.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong and eiicient' pipe clampby means of which a well casing or similar body can be securely gripped at any desired point thereof so that the casing can be withdrawn, which is adjustable so that a single device can be used with pipes of diiierent sizes, which will operate to grip the pipe -with increasing force as its resistance in being withdrawn is augmented, and which can be manipulated with ease and rapidity.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully ldescribed hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which-. Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a pipe casing having applied thereto two forms of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of one form of the device; and Fig. 3 is a ,plan view of another form of the pipe cla-mp.
Before proceeding to a more detailed eX- .planation of my invention, it should be clearly understood that while the device is particularly designed for use in well drilling operations it can also be advantageously employed 'for other purposes in which it is ,desirable or necessary to securely grip a irounded body so that a pull can be applied Certain of the details of construction shown for example herewith, form no part of the invention, and can be varied in accordance with individual preference and special conditions, without deviating from the essence of the invention as dened in the appended claims.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in one form of my pipe clamp I employ abody 10 comprising two members 11 kand 12 each fashioned from strap iron or steel bent into suitable shape. The member 11 has at one end a U-shaped part 13 and at the other end a correspondingly disposed V-shaped part 14. The free ends of the strap are -separated a little distance. The member 12 has a substantially straight portion 15 and a U-shaped portion 16. It is pivotally secured by means of screws or bolts 17 to the member 11 at the V-shaped part of the same. The part 16 of the member 12 is so proportioned that the part 14 of the member 11 is received within it, as is clearly shown .in Fig. 2. Near the end, the straight part 15 of the member 12 has a recess 18 extending inwardly from an edge thereof, for a purpose which will appear hereinafter. The body 10 receives, the pipe 19 or other object to be gripped by the clamp, and the part v14 of the body constitutes a yoke which engages the pipe as is clearly shown.
The clamp includes a grip member 20 which comprises a threaded shank or stem 21, and a V-shaped jaw 22, the inner edges 23 of whichfare sharpenedvor corrugated to grip the pipe securely. A cross bar vmember 24 having a substantially central enlargement 25 is journaled in suitable openings of the sides of the U-shaped part 11 of the body memberv 10, and is provided with a threaded opening to receive the correspondingly threaded shank 21. Locking nuts 26 serve to secure the shank adjustablyin position relatively to the pivot member. The latter at the ends has retainingnuts 27 and is extended at one end so that it can be received in the recess 18. yAt the end, the shank 21 has a hook 28 by ymeans of which suitable tackle can be applied to operate the clamp. It will be understood that by pulling upon the gripping member at the hook 28 the pipe will be securely clamped between the' jaw and the yoke of the body. The parts of the body, which are adjustable relatively to one another, are secured in operative relation by means of one of the nuts 27. The two parts can be released however, so that they can be swung open at the side so that the pipe can be introduced between the separated ends of the members 11 and 1.2.
In the form of the device shown in Fig. 3 I employ a yoke or body 29 comprising a V-shaped part 30 and substantially parallel, straight ends 31v which are preferably upwardly disposed. A shackle 32 has inturned ends received in openings of the sides of the body, and serves for the application of hoisting tackle 33 to the clamp. A gripping member 34: is employed with a jaw 35 corresponding to that of the similar element in the previously described form of the device. The gripping member also has a threaded shank 36 received in a correspondingly threaded opening of a pivot member 37 journaled inopenings of the ends 81 of the body. Retaining nuts 38 serve to secure the pivot member movably in posit-ion. I employ lock nuts 39 upon the shank 36, to secure the gripping member adjustably in position.
It will be seen that in both forms of the device the gripping member can be adjusted longitudinally thereof to adapt the clamp for use with pipes or like bodies of different slzes.
It is to be understood that in using my pipe clamp, the device shown in Fig. 2 will normally rest upon a platform or upon the ground around the pipe that is to be pulled out of the well casing, and that the grip member Q0 will engage the length of pipe or tubing 19, to prevent it from dropping back into the well in case it should be released. It will be apparent that the string ofpipe or tubing 19 can be made to move upward with respect to the grip member 20, but cannot move in the opposite direction with respect thereto.
As for the clamping device shown in Fig. 3, to which is attached the pulley-block 33, ythis form of clamp is designed to engage the pipe in such a way that it can be utilized to pull up the string, the gripping member 84 being so mounted as to serve this purpose. The clamp comprising the gripping member 34 can slide down along the pipe, but cannot slide upward along the same, because when it is moved upward the gripping member 34C binds against the pipe and pulls the pipe up with it. Thus, the two clamps, one containing the gripping member 20 and the other the gripping member 34, coperate with eac-h other, the former preventing the string from falling back into the well casing if it should be released, and the other serving to pull the string of pipe or tubing upward; and during the operation of pulling .the string of pipe or tubing upward, the
clamp containing the gripping member 20 allows of the free movement of the pipe or tubing 19 through the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Y l 1. A device of the class described comprising a body having a yoke portion adapted to receive a pipe or the like, a member pivotally associated with said body having a threaded opening, and a gripping member having a threaded stem received in said opening and having'a jaw adapted to grip the pipe.
2. A device ofthe class described comprising a body having a yoke portion adapted to receive a pipe or the like, a member pivotally associated with said body and having a threaded opening, and a vgripping member having a threaded stem received in said openingl and having a jaw adapted to grip the pipe, said gripping member having means for applying a pull thereto.
3. A device of the class described comprosing a body having spaced sides adapted to receive a pipe or the like, a pivoted member journaled between said sides, a gripping member having a jaw adapted to engage the pipe, and having a threadedstem adjustably received by said member.
4. A device of the class described comprising a body having spaced sides and adapted to receive a pipe or the like, ya transverse, pivotally movable member mounted between the sides of said body and having a threaded opening, a gripping member having a threaded stem arranged in said opening and provided with a V- shaped jaw adapted to engage lthe pipe, and means for adjustably lockingosaid gripping member in position.
