J. W. TEETZEL. CLUTUH 0R CLAMP FOR RAISING OR LOWERING TILE 0R PIPE.
Patented Se IIIIIIIIIIIII k n UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. TEETZEL, OF OTTAVA, ILLINOIS.
CLUTCH OR CLAMP FOR RAISING OR LOWERING TILE OR PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,594, dated September 2, 1890.
Application filed March 23, 1888\ Serial Not 268,248 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. TEETZEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottawa, i.n the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Clutches or Clamps for Raising or Lowering Tile or Pipe, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the end of a tile, or pipe in section with the clutch closed for Withdrawal. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the tile or pipe in section and the clutch inside thereof and open for handling the tile-section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the clutch. Fig. 4: is a cross-section of the clutch.
It is not uncommon to bore a well and then insert in the hole sections of tile or pipe placed one upon the other to form the wall of the well.
The objects of my invention are to construct an expansible clutch or holding device which can be inserted in a section of tile or pipe and can be expanded for the purpose of holding the pipe while it is being raised and lowered into the well, and which, after the tile has been lowered to place, can be closed or released, so that the device can be removed from the tile or pipe without disturbing the same, and to so construct the device that the sections of tile will be properly centered one upon the other, which I accomplish as illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter fully described. That which I claim as new will be pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, A represents one section of the clutch, having its entering end A curved and pointed to permit the end to enter a pipe-section end without coming in contact therewith, and, as shown, the inner face of the body of the section is cut away on both edges to form a rim with flat sides.
B is the companion section of the clutch, having an entering end B corresponding to the end A, and having a rim with flat side faces on its inner face.
0 is a movable block or head lying between the sections A B, and connected with the sections A B by the cross plates or bars a at the top and bottom, each bar at having a series of holes 0, by which the spread. of the sections is regulated, and each bar being connected at 'one end to the section A or the section B by a bolt 1), and both bars being connected to the center head or block 0 by a bolt d passing through at one of the series of holes a, to which the sections are adjusted.
There are four bars a. near the top of the sections A B=two on each side-and there are four similar bars a lower down on said sectionstwo on each sideand each of the two sets of bars on opposite sides is connected to'the head by a common bolt (Z and to the sections by bolts 1). The lower ends of the bars a are not connected with the sections A 13. hen the center blockC is raised, the tendency is to expand or spread apart the sections A B, and raising the sections A B has a tendency to bring them nearer together.
D is a loop attached to the upper end of the center head or block 0.
E is achain attached at each end by a staple c or otherwise to the upper end of the sections AB.
F is a releasing-rope attached to the chain E.
G is a 1ifting-rope attached to the loop D.
H is a section of tile which has been set in place,
I is a section of tile which is being lowered to place.
ff are springs secured by screws or otherwise to the ends A B of the sections A B,
being lowered, the springs being forced back into the ends A B when theyeuter the tile H.
In use the sections A B are to be set according to the size of pipe to be used, which can be done by adjusting the bars coupon the block by means of the bolts (Z and the holes 0. The device is then to be dropped into the section of tile or pipe which is to be placed in position, and the lower ends A B of the device are to project beyond the lower end of the section of tile or pipe, which can come in contact with the springs f f. These springs ff aid in supporting the tile and assist the operator in adjusting the device so that the ends A B of the sections A B will project below the lower ends of the tile-section being set. The projecting parts A B, when the section of tile is lowered to place, will enter the end of the tile or section already in place and properly center the tile or section which which springs aid to support the tile which is is being set, When the device with a pipesection is suspended by the rope G, the sections A B will be spread apart and brought into close contact with the interior of the tile or pipe section, and the same will be held securely While being lowered to place. As the ends A B of the sections A B enter the section H of tile, the springs ff will be forced inward, allowing the section of tile which is being placed in position to come to its proper place upon the upper end of the section H. By pulling upon the rope F the chains Ewill be drawn taut, which will release the sections A B from the interior of the pipe, and the device can then be drawn out without disturbing the section which has just been placed in' position.
The device is very simple in construction and can be readily and quickly adjusted to suit tile or pipe of Various diameters, as all that is required for adjustment is to remove the boltscl and set the arms afor that adjustin g-hole c which will give the required spread to the jaws and then replace the bolt d, and
in use the device will have a firm bearing on the tile or pipe by reason of its contact with the inner face of the tile or pipe, and at the same time the entering ends A B will act and properly center each section with the preceding one, the springs f f being pressed back into the ends A B by the tile H.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
lhe two sections A B, each adapted to engage with the inner surface of a tile and provided with curved lower ends, in combination with a center block 0, two toggles, each pivoted to the sections A B and to the block 0, one above the center and the other below the center of the block, a lifting rope or chain connected with the block 0, and a releasing rope or chain connected with the sections A B, substantially as and for the purpose specifled.
JOHN W. TEETZEL. Witnesses:
