NED- Row, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anacortes, in the county of Skagit and State of "Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Releasing- Hooks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing This invention relates to improvements in supporting hooks and more particularly to that class of supporting' hooks which are generally designated as releasing hooks for boats and the like.

An object of this invention is the provision of a releasing hook comprising a pair of pivotally connected jaws which are suitably mounted in a supporting body, one of the jaws carrying a locking cam to lock the jaws together, whereby a chain or other suitable carrying device will be detachably secured to the hook.

Another object of this invention is the releasing' hook, comprising a pair of jaws pivotally connected together intermediate of their ends in a supporting body, one of the jaws carrying a cam lever for engagement with the other jaw, whereby the hooked ends of the jaws may be opened or locked, as desired.

W ith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Referring more particularly to the drawing, my invention consists of a supporting body which comprises a pair of spaced parallel side bars 5, between the-upper ends of which a spacing block 6 is secured, the spacing block having an upwardly extending eye 7 which projects above the upper ends of the side bars 5 for connection to a supporting chain 8. Each of the side bars 5 has an opening 9 formed therein adjacent its lower end, for the reception of the opposite Each of the jaws is provided with an inwardlyextending apertured ear 12, the openings in the ears registering to receive the pivot pin 10, whereby the jaws are pivotally mounted between the side bars 5 at their lower ends. Each of the jaws is formed with a hooked lowerend 13 so that when the lower ends of the jaws are engaged with each other, an eye` 14 is formed therebetween for the reception of a chain'or the like (not shown) which is connected at its opposite end to a boat or similar member (not shown) which the hookis desired to carry.

The jaw 11 has an opening 15 formed therein at its upper end, in which the upper end of a lever 16 is pivotally mounted on a pivot pin 17, the jaw 11 having a longitudinal groove 18 formed in its upper edge for thereception of one edge of the locking lever 16 when in locked shaped head 19 is formed on the upper end of the lever 16, the .cam 19 `projecting' inwardly through the opening 15 for engagement with the upper end of the jaw l1 whereby the upper ends of the jaws 11 and 11 are held in spaced relation with each other, to secure the hooked ends 13 locked against each other. An opening 20 is formed in the lower end of the lever 16, to receive one end of a flexible cord 21, whereby the locking lever may be operated to allow separation of the hooked ends of the jaws.

ln the practical use of my improved releasing hook, the supporting chain or other supporting device which is connected to the member to be carried by the hook, is placed between the lower hooked ends of the jaws when the locking lever 16 is in raised position, whereupon the free end of the locking lever is lowered so that the inner edge thereol2 engages in the groove 18 in the outer edge of the aw 11, whereby the cam 19 is moved into engagement with the inner face otl the jaw 11, to close the lower ends of the jaws to securely hold the supporting member therebetween. lhen it is desired to open the jaws of the device, it is merely necessary to pull upwardly upon the cord 21 which is connected to the .tree end of the lever 16, so that the cam 19 is removed from engagement with the inner position.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that l have provided a releasing hook which may be quickly locked to any member which it is desired to carry, and which may be quickly disengaged there- Afrom by an upward pull upon the locking lever i6. lt will be understood that the releasing hook may be used in connection with logging trains or in connection with any other device in which hooks of this character are employed.

Having thus fully described my invention, what l desire to secure andclaim by Letters Patent, is zl. A device ol the character described comprising a supporting body, a pair of jaws pivotally mounted intermediate of their ends in said body, one end of each of said jaws being provided with a hooked portion, and a cam lever carried by one of the jaws adjacent its other end, said cam lever being adapted tor engagement against the adjacent end of the other jaw, to detachably hold the hooked portions of the jaws in closed position.

2. A device of the class described comprising a supporting body, a kpair of pivotally connected jaws pivotally mounted in the body, the outer end of each jaw projecting from the body and being provided with a hooked portion, the inner end of one of the jaws having an opening formed therein,
