Description

F. .WHITKANACIL .ROPE CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 25.A |918.

ROPE-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1919.
Application led October 26, 1918. Serial No. 259,787.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Firmin W'HITKANACK, residing at Vest Union, in the county of Clark and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rope- Clamps, of which the following is a speciication.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple inexpensive and efficient clamping device suitable for application to a rope and serving as a means of attaching a clevis or the equivalent thereto, as in hauling lumber and in other operations incident to farming and in relation to lumbering camps and the like, the construction of the clamp being such that it may be applied readily to any portion of the length of a rope or cable and shifted from time to time as the requirement of the work demands without the use of tools and without the loss of time and injury to the rope incident to forming ties, knots and the like.
Further objects and advantages will appear hereinafter it being understood that changes in form, proportion and details may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side view of a clamp embodying the invention applied in the operative position to a rope.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
Fig. 4 is a plan view with the members of the clamp .in the open position.
The device embodying the invention consists of hingedly connected clamp members 10 and l1, the former of which is preferably extended at one end beyond the other and is provided with an opening 12 for facilitating engagement of a clevis or other draft appliance thereto. The members 10 and 11 are provided at one edge with registering eyes 18 for the reception of a permanent hinged pin 14, and at the opposite edges with eyes 15 for the reception of a removable locking pin 16, providing for the opening of the clamp for the reception of arope or cable 17.
Pivotally mounted in an opening 18 in the member 11 as by a transverse pin 21 is a cam lever 22 terminally projecting into a guide 23 formed by the registering grooves Copies of this patent may be or teeth formed respectively in the members 10 and 11, said cam being normally held in position for engaging a rope or cable extending through the clamp by gravity and being manually movable to a folded bosition indicated in Fig. 1 in dotted lines to disengage the cable and permit of the sliding movement of the clamp with relation thereto, so that the device may be engaged with any desired portion of the length of the rope. When the cam is released and is moved to engaging positionby the weight of the body portion thereof located outside of or beyond the pivotal point, it serves to engage the rope and the force or strength of the engagement is proportionate to the strain applied to the rope or cable, so that accidental displacement or slipping of the clamp upon the rope is prevented.
When the clamp is not required it may be readily disconnected from the rope by opening the clamp through the dismounting of the removable pin or key, and obviously the replacement of the same may be accomplished with equal facility, the adjustment longitudinally of the cable being possible from time to time merely by relieving the pressure of the cam upon the rope, without opening the clamp.
As illustrated, the opening 12 constituting the means for the attachment of the draft appliance consists of the throat of a hook 24 within which is suspended a ring closure 25 which spans the throat while readily displaceable to permit the engagement of the clevis with the hook. 'Ihe ring prevents accidental displacement or disengagement in the use of the device.
Having described the invention I claim:
A rope clamp comprising a pair of plates arcuate in cross section, permanently hingedly connected at one longitudinal edge and having their other longitudinal edges detachablv connected, one end of one of said plates being cut away to provide an opening and being provided with spaced laterally extending ears at the sides of said openlng, the corresponding end of the other plate being formed into an attaching hook, and a longitudinally extending cam pivoted between said ears and extending through said opening into the space between said plates.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
