SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,233, dated June 9, 1903.
Application filed February 3. 1902. Serial No- 92,380. My invention relates to that class of devices employed for raising, lowwing, and drawing well tubing or casing, comprising reins or bail-links, clamps, or jaws for seizing the easing or tubing, and means for locking the clamp or jaws when closed upon the tubing or casing, and, while generally applicable for use with all classes of tubing or casing, has been especially devised as an elevator for flush-joint casing ortubing-that is-t0 say,
such tubing as is devoid of flanges, sleevecouplings, orthimbles.
To this end the main feature ot' my invention embodies the eombinat ion, in a casing or tubing elevator, of pivoted jaws having a plurality of converging inclines on their interior, included serrated wedge slips or wicket-s, and means for locking the pivoted jaws, whereby the tube or casing may be seized and held while raising onlowering the same.
A second feature of my invention embraces thecombinatiomin atubingorcasingelcvator, ot pivoted jaws having a plurality of converging inclines on their interior, included springsupported wedge slips or wickers, and locking mechanism for the pivoted jaws, whereby the elevator may adjust itself to pipes of different diameters.

In order that the jaws may open freely when the bail-links C U are lowered, one link-slot. The pivoted jaws A and 15 are recessed on their interior to form a plurality of converging inclined seats 1 for a plurality of wedge slips or wickers 3, so that said slips or wiekers will move to and from the axis ot'the clamp accordingly as they move down or up said inclines.

In order to prevent the displacement of the slips or wickers when the pivoted jaws A and B are open, the slips 2 2 are secured by headed pins or screws (3, which extend thereinto through elongated slots 7, the exteriorwalls of the jaws at such points being parallel with the inclines 3, as at 8, to prevent any binding of the slips or wickers 2 2 in their downward travel. I
The lower ends of the reins or bail-links C C are drawn in, as at 9, so as to embrace closely the pivot lugs a and locking-lugs I), and at said points are encircled by tie-links 10, which prevent the spreading of the lower ,ends of the baildinks and support the jaws under lateral strains. These tie-links 10 may be fixed in position by set-screws 11, and the onejon the bail-link of the locking arms or lugs is or maybe provided with aspring bolt or latch 12, the lower end of which enters an elongated keeper-slot in the upper surface of the lockings-lugs or locking-arms 1/. Such a construction will permit the limited movement of the bail-link incident to the swaying of the elevator, and will at the'same time prevent such movement of the bail-link as would tend to release the jaws.
The construction of thecasing or tubing elevator being substantially such as hereinbefore setforth, the devices will ope etc as follows: The set-screws 5 are adjusted to depress the slips or wickers 2, causing the same to move down the converging inclines 1 and inward toward the axis of the clamp until the interior diameter of the clamp corresponds with the casing or tubing to be raised or lowcred. 'lhe jaws A I are then separated, the
tube or easing "introduced, the jaws closed, the bail-links U 0 raised to lock the jaws, and the power applied. As the load is brought on the slips or wickers 2 2 they tend to move down the converging inclines 1 1, and thus increase their grip or bite on the tubing or casing in proportion to the increase of the load 01' power. As soon as the load is withdrawn, the spring-pins 3 react and cause the rise of the slips or wickers, so that they release the tubing or casing and permit a change of grip or the removal of the tubingoreasing at the will of the operator.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire t'o secure by Letters Patv cut, is
1. In a casing or tubing elevator, the combination with a clamp comprised of a pluralsanie, said jaws having converging inclines.
on their interior, of a plurality of yieldinglysupported wedge-shaped serrated slips or wickers for each jaw, said slips orwickers concentrically arranged and movably connected with their respective jaws, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. In a casing or tubing elevator, the combination with a clamp comprised of a plurality of pivoted jaws and means for locking the same, said jaws having cmiverging inclines on their interior, of a plurality of wedgeshaped serrated slips or wickers concentrically arranged and movably connected w'ith their respective jaws, and adjustable means for varying the limit of the upward movement of the wickers in the clamps, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
4. In a casing or tubing elevator, the com bination with pivoted clamp-jaws having a plurality of converging inclines on their interior, of a plurality of included and springsupported slips or wickers, a plurality of setscrews in the upper part of the jaws for limiting the upward travel of the slips or wickers and means for locking the clamp-jaws, sub-' stantially as and for the purposes specified.
5. In a casing or tubing elevator, the combination with pivoted clamp jaws having locking-lugs provided ontheir upper surface.
with a keeper-slot, of a bail-link which incloses the locking-lug, a tie-link for said baillink and a latch movably mounted on the tielink, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
