To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MoKis- SICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Taft, in the county of Kern and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Hold.- ing lVell-Tubings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in packers for oil wells and the like and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will securely prevent the tubing from sliding or'dropping downwardly into the well.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a sleeve like body member with spring held slips or friction jaws carried thereon and a still further object resides in providing beveled faces on. the sleeve-likebody, with which cooperate the beveled inner faces of the slips for forcing the latter outwardly, when the body drops downwardly. y
A still further object of the invention resides in providing a device which is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efiicient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as. will be hereinafter'referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the'accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figurel is a side elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough as seen on .line 22, of Fig. 1, with parts in elevation. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section therethrough as seen on line 33, of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a similar view as seen on. line 4-4 Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view partly in section of one of the slips removed.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference in an opening 2, formed in the ground and.
leading to a well therebelow. In order to holdthe tubing in position in the casing of the opening 2, to prevent the same from dropping downwardly, while an additional tubing section is being secured thereto, I
provide my packer or the like,'which consists of a sleeve-like body member 3, loosely applied tothe-tubing 1, said body having the bore at its upper end slightly enlarged and threaded, as shown at 1. Also applied to the tubing 1,- and threaded into engagement with the threaded end 4, of the body 3, is a sleeve member-L5 which is provided at diametrically opposite points therein with the vertical slots 6, the lower ends of said slots terminating in the angular or lateral notches 7.

-is a band or ring 9, the shanks of these'bolt's being disposed through the vertical slots 6 in the sleeve 5, thereby permitting the heads of said bolts to project beyond the latter. The body 8,"with'the sleeve member 5 may, therefore, be said to have connection with the tube 1, to be moved upwardly and downwardly 'with the latter and secured to the body 3 and extending longitudinally thereof, at diametrically opposite points thereon, are
.the friction springs 10. These friction springs. are adapted to contact with the walls of the well casing to prevent rotation of the body member and parts carried thereby.
The sleeve-like body member 3 is also provided at diametrically opposite pointsthereon and alternating the springs 10, with the inwardly beveled faces 11 and adapted to be applied to these beveled faces are the slips or friction jaws 12, the inner faces of which are beveled outwardly toward their lower ends coincident to the inclination of the faces 11, whereby when said slips are properly applied to the body 3, the same complete the formation of said body. Also applied to the tube 1, below the body 3, is a plate 13, to which is applied a collar or the like 14 which also encircles the tube 1 and loosely disposed through openings in the plate 13, at diametrically opposite points thereon, are the bolts 15, the threaded free ends of which are engaged with the lower ends of the slips or friction jaws 12. After my attachment is applied to the tube 1, the latter is, turned until the shanks of the bolts 8 register with the vertical slots 6, whereupon said tube is allowed-to drop downwardly through the opening 2. As the latter is dropped downwardly, carrying therewith the sleeve member 5 and sleevelike body 3, and the slips 12 sliding along the beveled faces 11 of the body member 3 will be forced outwardly to frictionally en: gage the walls of the casing, thereby securing the tube against downward movement. The friction springs 10 on the body member 3 will prevent the rotation of the latter and parts carried thereby as the device is I dropped downwardly.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a device which is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor deta1ls of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
In practice,'it is desirable to provide a Water course on the outer faces of the members 12 to permit the water to travel therethrough as the device is lowered in the well.
. Having thus described this invention, what I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a tubing adapted for use in connection with a well; of a sleeve-like body member loosely applied thereto, said body member being provided at diametrically opposite points thereon with inwardly beveled faces, a sleeve member applied to the tubing and removably engaged with the upper end of said body member, said sleeve member being provided with vertical slots at diametrically opposite points thereon, said slots terminating at their lower ends in laterally extending and outwardly flaring notches, means engaged with said tubing and extending through the slots of said sleeve member to afford a substantial connection between the tubing and sleeve member, a plate loosely applied to said tubing below the body member, bolts looselv disposed through .said plate, a pair of slips secured at their lower ends to the upper ends of said bolts and applied to the beveled faces of said body member, and spring members encircling said bolts between the plate and lower ends of said slips.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a tubing adapted for use in connection with a well; of a sleeve-like body member loosely applied thereto, said member being provided at diametrically opposite points thereon with inwardly beveled faces, a sleeve member also applied to said tubing and removably engaged with the upper end of said body member, said sleeve member being provided at diametrically opposite points thereon with vertical slots which terminate in laterally extending and outwardly flaring notches, means engaged with said tubing and extending through the slots of said sleeve member to afford asliding connection between the tubing and said body member, spring controlled slips applied to the beveled faces of said body member and adapted to engage the wall of a well casing when the tubing is dropped downwardly, and said body member being provided with vertical slots at diametrically opposite points thereon and alternate of said slips and leaf spring members suitably mounted in said last mentioned slots and bent a'rcuately at their ends to permit portions' thereof to project beyond the outer periphery of the body member for engagem'ent-Avith a well casing to prevent the rotation of said body member and parts carried thereby. r
