Be it known that I, Gnonon WV. MCGANDY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Marshall, in the county of Lyon and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Tile-Setter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention involves a new and improved device for setting tiles in posit-ion in wells or similar excavations, and the principal object of my invention is to provide a device which will perform the work in an efficient manner.
A further object of my invention is to provide such a device constructed and arranged to be used with tiles or pipes of different diameters.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the class described which is adjustable in its construction whereby it may be used with different sized tiles, the device comprising movable parts whereby tiles of different sizes may be quickly and accurately positioned within a well or other bore.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of my device in operative position within a tile; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same in inoperative position; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view thereof; Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a partial detail of one of the stationary positions.
The tile setter comprises a central supporting element 1 having suitable means at its upper end for attaching a rope or wire 2 thereto, such means preferably comprising a hook or eye 3 supported in any suitable mannor, as by a U-shaped member 4:.
Extending radially from the center of the supporting element 1 are a plurality of stationary members 5 and pivoted movable members 6, each of the members being in en gagement at its outer end with rods 7, 8, the rods 7 being stationary while the rods 8 are movable by suitable means to be later described. The outer ends of the members 5 may be secured to the rods 7 in any suitable manner, as by means of boltsand nuts 9, there being similar bolts and nuts engaging the outer ends of the members 6 and the rods 8, although it is obvious that more rods may be used, if so desired.
The lower end of each of the rods 7, 8, is preferably provided with an inwardly curved end piece 10 whereby the device may be easily guided into a tile or pipe 11.
The supporting member 1 is provided with a plurality of transversely extending openings into which the members 5 extend, these members being held in position by any suitable means, such as a bolt and nut 12, the relation of the parts being maintained by means of diagonal braces 13, in engagement with the supporting element 1 and the rods 17. Referring particularly to Fig. 5 it is to be noted that each of the members 5 is pro-- vided with a plurality of openings 14, 14, either of which adapted for engagement with the bolt 12 whereby the rods 7 may be positioned at varying distances from the side of the supporting element 1, thereby ,adapting the device for use with tiles or pipes of different diameters.
The rods S are engaged at the outer ends by the members 6, as previously mentioned, each one of these rods having an upwardly extending link 15 engaged therewith, (Figs. 1 and 2) upward movement of the links, by means of a suitable cable or rope 16. moving the rods upwardly and hence nearer the supporting element 1, whereby the device may be brought out of frictional contact with the inside of the tile or pipe preparatory to lifting the device, as shown particularly in Fig. 2. In order to provide for this movement of the rods 8, the diagonal braces 13 are omitted, the inner ends of the members 6 being in pivotal engagement with the transversely extending bolts '16, there being suitable recesses 17 in the sides of the supporting element 1, communicating with the openings therein in which the radially extending stationary members are positioned, whereby this movement of the rods 8 is permitted. The members or lovers 6 may be provided at their inner ends with a plurality of openings similar to the openings 14, 14, in the members 5 whereby the rods 8 may also be moved relatively to the supporting element 1 similarly to the rod 7 when it is desired to engage the device in tiles or casings of different diameters.
The links 15 may be guided in their movement, if so desired, by any suitable means carried by the supporting element 1, straps or staples being preferably employed for this purpose.
As shown particularly in Figs. 1, 3 and 4,
the device is positioned within a tile or casing member by frictional contact therewith, the distance between the outside portions of opposite rods being slightly greater than the inside diameter of the tile or casing so that when the rods 8 are moved into their lowermost position the tile is held firmly on the device and in position to be lowered into a bore or well; the tile being suitably positioned within the well the links are moved upwardly whereby the rods 8 are brought nearer the supporting element 1, movement of these rods bringing all of the rods out of contact with the inside of the tile, whereby the device may be raised out of the well, leaving the tile in position therein.
The material of which the different parts are made may be such as is best suited for the purpose, either in wood or metal, and the particular kinds of wood or metal which may be used is of no particular importance as such changes may be determined largely by the cost at which it is desired to o-fler the device and the particular class of work with which it is to be used.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device of the class described, comprising a supporting element having openings and recesses communicating with the openings, radially extending stationary members positioned in the openings, pivoted movable members positioned in the recesses, means engaging the said members and the supporting element whereby the parts are maintained in position, vertical rods carried by the outer ends of the stationary members and the movable members, andaplurality of braces extending from the supporting element to the stationary rods whereby the same are held immovable.

A device of the class described, comprising a supporting element having openings and recesses therein, the recesses communicating with the openings, radially extending stationary members positioned in the openings, radially extending movable members positioned in the recesses, vertical l. rods secured to the outer ends of the stationary members, vertical rods secured to the outer ends of the movable members, a
plurality of braces extending from the supporting element to the rods carried by the stationary members whereby the same are held immovable, and upwardly extending links engaging the movable rods whereby the same may be moved relatively to the supporting element, thereby providing for positioning of the device within a tile or analogous article.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a supporting element having therein bers in the openings, vertical rods at the outer end of the members, aplurality of braces engaging the said element and, the
