To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, Lome H. ScHAnLow, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New Berlin, in the county of Waukeshaand State `of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in F lagpoles, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, `which are ay part of this specification. This invention relates to improvements in Hag pole constructions, and has for one of its objects to provide a pole supported in such a manner as to permit of its being swung downwardly to an inclined position i. for the purpose of attaching the flag thereto,
or in order that repairs may be made to the upper parts.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described in which the usual sheave or pulley and rope or cord passingthereover for the purpose of attaching and hoisting the flag may be dispensed with.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which will be simple in construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and more efficient in use than those which have been heretofore proposed.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views;
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a 'Hag pole made in accordance with the present invention, portions of the parts being broken away and shown in section for the sake of clearness;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view, taken approximately on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows; and,
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view through one of the movable collars or sleeves to which thel Hag is attached, the said view being taken approximately on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the said drawings, the numeral 5 indicates a support which may be composed of a pair of pipe or tubular members, 6 and 7 which are bent approximately at their mid portions to form an eye 8, and which have their ends 9 firmly imbedded in a concrete or other block or base 10, see Fig. 1.
The said members, 6 and 7, are suitably spaced apart, asis clearly indicated in Fig. 2, and a socket member 11, provided with the trunnions 12, is pivotally mounted in the eye portions 8 of the said members. The said trunnions are preferably surrounded by washer members 13, and the parts may be heldin place by means of the bolt la and nut 15, as will be clear from Figs. 1 and 2.
The said socket member 11 receives the downwardly extending rod or pipe 16, the lower end of which is provided with a sliding sleeve 17 which is adapted to fit over a post or pin 18, which is rmly imbedded in the concrete base 10, as will be clear from Fig. 1. The upwardly extendingportion of the socket member 11 is threaded to receive the rod or tube 20 constituting the flag pole proper, and which may, of course, be of any suitable or desired length and diameter.
Slidab-ly mounted upon the said rod 20` is a pair of collar or sleeve members 21 and 22 which are provided with the pivoted ears 23 and 24 respectively, to which the inner corners of the flag or pennant are adapted to be secured, as by hooks, pins, short pieces of rope, or Vin any other suitable manner. The said sleeve members, 21 and 22, may be positioned a suitable distance apart by means of the collars, 25 and 26, which are provided with the set screws, 27 and 28 respectively, whereby the last mentioned collars may be secured to the said pole 2O at any desired points. The uppermost sleeve member 22 may be prevented from working off the top end of the pole 20 by means of a collar 29 provided with a set screw 30 and mounted above the said sleeve 22, as will be clear from Fig. 1.
In use, when it is desired to attach the l lil) trated in Fig. l, `and the sleeve 17 moved downwardly to cause it to again engage the post or pin 1S. When in this position, the parts are securely. locked against movement in all directions. It will also be obvious that, should it become necessary to repair any part of the pole or to paint the same, these operations maybe readily carried out by lowering` the said pole about the trunnions 'l2 to a substantially horizontal position, thus eliminating the necessity for the workman to climb the said pole.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary thedetails of construction as well as the arrangement oi parts without departing from the spirit ot the invention, and therefore it is not wished to be limited to the above disclosure except as may be required by the claims.
wWhat is claimed is:
l. in a device oi? the class described, a rigid support; a socket membervpivotally carried by said support; an upwardly extending` pole carried by said socket member; a downwardly extending rod member also carried by said socket; rigid means positioned beneath said downwardly extending rod member in axial alignment therewith; and means carried by said downwardly extending member adapted'to readily engage and .disengage said rigid means yfor locking the parts in a substantially vertical position.
2. 'In a device ofthe'class described, a rigid support; a socket member pivotally carried by said support; an upwardly extending pole carried by said socket member; a downwardly'extending rod member also carried by said socket; a rigid post beneath said support; and means slidably carried by said downwardly extending member adapted to engage said post for locking the parts in a substantially vertical position.
3. A device of the class described comprising a pairvo spaced supporting members, each provided with an eye portion; a socket member :provided with trunnions journalled in said eye portions a pole carried by said socket member; means slidably carried by said ole Ytor securing a flag thereto;
a downward y extendingv rod member carried by said socket; a rigid post beneath said support; and a sleeve slidably mounted on said downwardly extending member, adapted to engage said post to lock the parts in'a substantially vertical position.
