Description

Feb. 5, 1952 G. w. MILLER DEVICE FOR EXTRACTING PIPES FROM WELLS Filed Dec. 1e. 1948 4 mlm INVENTOR.
f G60/"Q6 M//Wllcr BY I n A t of'n eg Patented Feb. 5, 1952 DEVICE FOR EXTRACTIN G PIPES FROM WELLS George W. Miller, Cedars, Pa.
Application December 16, 1948, Serial No. 65,570
1 Claim.
pipe or tubing from wells and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a Well tube extractor which is adapted to be easily attached to the tube and which will assure a rm grip on the tube during use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a well tube extractor which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the extractor attached to a pipe;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral I designates a U-shaped strap or yoke which includes the spaced legs The yoke I0 embraces the pipe or tube I3 which is to/be extracted from a well or the like.
Interposed between the legs |I of the yoke is a lever I4 which is pivotally connected thereto by a headed bolt or pin I 5, there being a nut I6 threaded on the bolt I for maintaining the parts in assembled relation. The lever I4 is fabricated of suitable material and is provided with an lnclined, arcuate end wall I'I which defines an upper arcuate gripping lip I8 for a purpose to be later described. Formed integrally with the lever I4 and extending therefrom is a pair of side members I9 each of which has its free end apertured, as at 20. A ring 2| slidably projects through the apertures 20, and the ring 2| is adapted to be engaged by a hook 22 that depends from a suitable chain 23.
In use of the device for removing a pipe I3 from a well, the extractor is moved downwardly so that the pipe is embraced by the yoke I0 and the lever I4, the parts being in the position shown by solid lines, Figures 2, Then, to extract the pipe I3, the chain 23 is moved upwardly by a suitable source of power (not shown) to move the ring 2| from its horizontal position to a vertical position. This causes the lever I4 to pivot about the pin I5 and the lip I8 will securely grip the pipe I3 so that upon continued upward movement of the chain 23, the pipe I3 2 will be extracted from the well. As soon as the tension on the chain is released, the pipe I3 will be released, since the lever I4 will be free to pivot. The extractor is constructed so that it may be moved downwardly on the pipe I3 and positioned below a coupling 24, as desired.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
A well tube extractor comprising a substantially U-shaped yoke having two straight parallel leg portions joined by a curved end portion, a pivot bolt passing transversely through and coupling said leg portions adjacent to the ends thereof remote from said curved portion, and a lever comprising a pair of spaced parallel elongated sides connected together at one end by a transverse wall which is inclined with respect to the length of the lever, said members being pivotally engaged on said bolt adjacent said transverse wall, said wall being transversely curved to substantially conform to the curvature of a tube lying between the wall and the said curved end portion of the yoke, said inclined wall having one end edge disposed farther from the other ends of said members than its other end edge whereby there is provided an arcuate gripping lip, the said other end portions of said members being inset toward the longitudinal center of the lever, the said other ends of the members being inwardly curved to merge into contacting parallel interconnected extremities extending in the plane of the longitudinal centers of the lever and said yoke, said extremities being transversely apertured, and a coupling element engaged in the said aperture to facilitate oscillation of the lever on said pivot bolt.
