Q Alttnmqys tion, taken in connection with Patented June 5, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 7 POST PULLER James Tarence Sanders, Pacific, Mo. Application June 14,1944, Serial No. 540,348 1 Claim. (01. 254-132) The present invention relates to new, and useful improvements in pullers, particularly for steel posts, and has for one of its important objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a
manually operable device of this character comprising unique means for firmly gripping the post at any point in its length. Y
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a puller of the aforementioned character which is adapted to accommodate various sizes of steel posts.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a post puller of the character described which will he comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly eiiicient and reliable in use, compact and which m y be manufactured at low cost. a i
All of the foregoing, and still further objects and advantages of the invention, will become apparent from a study of the following specificathe accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a post puller constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device. Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig ure 2.
Figure 4 is a view in front elevation of the device.
Figure 5 a detail view in perspectiveof the swinging outer jaw.
Figure 6 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially on the line 6-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 7 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line l'! of Figure 5, as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a metallic stand which is designated generally by reference character l. The stand I includes a pair of ver and 23 on the post.
tical metallic bars 2 which are secured together by rivets 3. At their lower ends, the bars 2 terminate in out-turned feet It which are secured by rivets 5 on a substantially triangular base 6. The bars 2 further include laterally offset, spaced upper end portions 1.
Journaled at an intermediate point on a bolt 8 between the upper end portions 7 of the bars 2 is a tubular metallic lever Q. Mounted in the rear end portion of the tubular lever 9 is an oplar lever 9 is for the reception of a pair of spaced,
forwardly projecting, downwardly curved metallic arms l2. A spacer I3 is provided between the arms 12 in the square portion ll of the member 9. A rivet l4 anchors the members i2 and I3 in the lever 9. The members I2 and 13 are further secured in the lever 9 by welding, as at I5.
Pivotally suspended between the spaced forward end portions of the arms I2 is a metallic link It. An inner jaw I1. is mounted for swinging movement on the link It. The jaw [I1 comprises a pair of spaced members I8 between which the link I 6 is pivotally secured by a bolt It. The
, Mounted for swinging movement on the jaw l! and cooperable therewith is an outer jaw 23. A bolt 24 pivotally secures the outer jaw23 on one side of the inner jaw ll. The jaw 23 includes a hook or the like 25 having a knurled or roughened face which is engag'eable with the post.
It is thought that the manner in which the device is used will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, thestand l is placed on the ground adjacent the post to be pulled. The jaws l1 and 23 are then swung forwardly and upwardly substantially as suggested in dotted lines in Figure 3 of the drawings and the post is engaged therebetween. The handle ill is thenswung upwardly to lower the jaws I! The construction and arrangement is such as to permit the jaws to readily slide downwardly on the post. However, when a the handle II] is swung downwardly, the jaws H new grip to be obtained. A bolt 26 pivotally secures the link l6 between the arms I2.
It is believed that the many advantages of a post puller constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
release the What is claimed is:
A post puller of the character described comprising a stand, a tubular lever pivotally mounted; at an intermediate point, for vertical swinging movement on said stand, an operating handle mounted in one end portion of the lever, a pair of spaced arms mounted in the other end portion of said lever, a link pivotally mounted between said arms, an inner jaw mounted for swinging movement on thetiink,.esaid.=inner jam-including 10 a pair of spaced members straddling one end portion of the link and pivotaily connected thereto, said inner jaw further including a, spacer between the members, and an outer jaw pivotaliy mounted on the inner jaw and cooperable therewith for gripping a post therebetween for operatively connecting the lever thereto, said outer jaw including a hook engageable with the post.
