To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SHELDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moore, in the county of Fergus and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVire-Bending Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to tools and has for an object to provide pliers for bending wires and the like.
To accomplish the desired result, use is made of relatively pivoted heads provided with teeth and having handles extended therefrom, the said heads each being provided with grooved hemispherical portions and having an aperture for-med there-between to slidably receive a headed link, tog: gle levers being connected to the said link and slidable relatively thereto, the said toggle levers having their outerends pivotally mounted on the handles so that when a wire is disposed in the grooved portions of the heads and the handles are pressed together the mentioned wire will assume a circular shape, means being provided to adjust the said link relatively to the said heads.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a pla n view of my device showing the same in open position, parts being broken away to disclose the underlying structure. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing my device in closed position, parts being broken away to disclose the underlying structure. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 44: in Fig. 2.

disposed that an aperture 15 will be formed by grooved portions 16 formed on the inner sides of the jaws 10. The outer ends of the jaws l0 terminate in gripping lugs 17 having teeth 18 formed thereon, the said lugs being adapted toengage, thus engaging-the teeth on each of the lugs 17 when it is desired to grip a wire or the like; and formed on the jaws 10 adjacent the teeth 18 are grooved hemispherical circular portions 19 adapted to substantially form a circle when the gripping lugs engage.
Mounted to slide in the aperture 15 between the jaws 10 and extending up to the grooved portions 19 is a link 20 having a slot 21 through which is extended the pin 11 and the said link is provided with a second slot 22 at one of the ends thereof, the other end of the link 20 terminating in a triangularly shaped head 23. A lug 24 is formed on the upper side of the link 20 and threadedly engaging the said lug is an adjusting screw 25. Pivotally mounted on the handles 12 are toggle levers 26, one of the levers being'connected to each handle and having their other ends pivotally con- .nected and operable in the slot 22 of the link 20.
In'the use of my device a rope end is inserted between the jaws l0 and a piece of wire passed over the rope end is also inserted between the jaws 10, the jaws being in open position. Now by pressing the handles 12 together, the jaws 10 will coact so that the piece of wire will be bent around the rope end and assume a circular shape owing to the hemispherical grooves 19 in the jaws 10, and -when the handles are pressed together, as mentioned, the toggles will force the link forwardly so that the head 23 will engage the wire. By exerting a strong pressure on the handles when they are pressed together the wire will be securely bent around the rope end and rigidly positioned thereon to prevent the strands of the rope from unraveling at the ends. When the tool is in closed position the toggle levers operating in the slot 22 at their point of connection will engage an end of the screw 25 and by adjusting the screw 25 the movement of the link 20 relatively to the jaws 10 can be adjusted so that the extension of the link between the jaws 10 can be increased or decreased according to the size of rope end that is inserted between the jaws and to which it is desired to secure a piece of Wire. By providing the teeth 18 on the lugs 17 my device can also be used as tweezers or pliers to disengage a wire secured to a rope end.
Although I have shown and described my tool as applied to secure wires to rope ends, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to this construction and de scription and that the scope and construction of the invention is defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, is
1. A tool comprising a plurality of relatively pivoted jaws, handles extended outwardly from the said jaws, the said jaws being provided with hemispherical grooved portions and having a longitudinally extending aperture formed therebetween, a link slidably mounted in the said aperture, a head formed on the said link and normally positioned adjacent the said grooved portions, the said link being provided with a slotat the outer end thereof, toggle levers pivotally connected to the said handles and slidable in the slot of the said link, and an adjusting screw mounted on the said link and adapted to engage the inner ends of the said toggle levers to adjust the same relatively to the said links. 1
2. A tool comprising a pair of relatively pivoted jaws, teeth formed on the outer ends of the said jaws, handles extended from the other ends of the said jaws, a link slidably mounted between the said jaws and provided with a slot at one end thereof, toggle levers pivotally connected to the said handle and slidable in the slot of the said link, and
means mounted on the said link and adapt- I ed to engage the said toggle levers to adjust the same relatively to the said link.
3. A tool comprising a plurality of jaws, a pin pivotally connecting the said jaws, handles extended from the said jaws, a link slidably mounted between the said jaws, the said link being adapted to slide relatively to the said jaws when the said handles are operated, and means mounted on the said link for adjusting the same relatively to the said jaws.
l. In a tool, the combination of a plurality of relatively pivoted aws having hemispherical grooves therein, integral gripping lugs formed on the outer ends of the said jaws, teeth formed on the said lugs, handles integrally formed on the said jaws and extended therefrom, a slotted link mounted to slide relatively to the said jaws, toggle levers pivotally mounted on the said handles and slidable in the slot of the said link, a head integrally formed on the outer end of the said link and normally disposed adja-' cent the said hemispherical grooves, an apertured bearing mounted in the said link, and an adjusting screw extended through the aperture in the said bearing and engag ing the said toggle levers to adjust the same relatively to the said link and limit the movement of the said link relatively to the said jaws.
