To all whom it may concern..-

Be it'known that I, CHARLES S. Pnn'rnoosr, a citizen of the--United States of America, residing at Napoleon, in the countyof Jack.- son and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire- Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to I make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereonywhich form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable and efficient device for stretching wires or repairing wire fences; and it consists more particularly in providing a lever with a metallic plate at one end having aserratedor notched end which is adapted to engage with a fence-post or other object, the lever also carrying a bar or plate through which passes-a set-screw having a block adapted to enter a box supported by or formed integral with the serrated plate, the attachments being adapted to be used in connection with tongs or pliers which are provided with grasping jaws and a wire-cutter, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a wire-stretcher constructed in accordance with my invention. The end of the bar or plate 0 is provided with a threaded aperture 0 through which passes a. set-screw D to the lower end of which is attached a The lever A is provided at a suitable distance from its end with an eye-bolt fwith which engages a swivel f, and with this swivel engage links carried by the handles of tongs or pliers F. The tongs or pliers are provided with jaws located to one side of the pivot and constructed to also provide a wire cutter.

This device is designed primarily for stretching wires in building fences, and when so used it may not be necessary to use the clamps adjacent to the serrated end of the plateB; but in connecting the broken ends of awire. one end of the wire is held by passing it between the end walls of the box E and the plate 01 and the other end is grasped between the jaws of the tongs or pliers, and by moving the lever'in the proper direction, the wires canibe stretched so that the ends may be joined by twisting them together.

Heretofore it has been proposed to provide a lever with tongs and with aserrated end for engagement with a fence-post, and I do not claim this feature of the invention; but

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a wire stretcher, the combinatiomof a lever A having tongs or pliers connected thereto, a plate B rigidly secured to the end of the lever and having teeth 1) at its end, a bar Osecured to one side of the lever so as to project over one side of the projecting portion of the plate B, and a set-screw provided on its inner end with a plate 61, the set-screw being carriedgby the bar 0 for clamping a wire between said plate d and the plate B, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination in a wire stretcher, of a lever having at one end a serrated plate B which projects beyond the end of the lever, a bar 0 rigidly attached to one side of the lever so as to project beyond the end thereof,

a set-screw and clamping plate carried by the projecting end of the bar 0, and a pair of tongs connected to the lever, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.

3. lhe combination in a Wirestretcher, of a leverA having at one end a recess for the reception of a plate with a serrated end, a bar C secured to one side of the lever by the bolts which pass through the plate B, a setscrew D having a clamping plate (1, the setscrew being carried by the projecting end of the bar so as to lie over the plate B, and tongs F connected to the lever A, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.

4. As an improved article of manufacture a wire stretcher, comprising aleverA having a pair of tongs or pliers connected thereto and a recess at one end, the inner end of the recess being inclined as shown, a plate B rigidly secured in the recess in the lever, the inner end of the plate corresponding with the shape of the recess and the outer end of the plate having teeth I), and a bar 0 rigidly secured to the lever and projecting over one side of the plate B, together with clamping means consisting of a set-screw D carried by the bar C and having a plate at and a box E formed on or secured to the plate B on a line with the set-screw, the box having an extended side to form a guide and notches to receive the wire, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
