Description

SAMUEL GUTH, OF WASHINGTON, ILLINOIS.
W IRE-FENCE TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 20, 1909.
Application filed February 18, 1903. Serial No. 143,985.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL GUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Wire-Fence Tool, of which the following is a specification.
I This invention relates to wire fence tools, such as are em loyed in the construction, maintenance an repair of wire fences.
The obj ect of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient implement which may be employed for tightening the strands of a wire fence after the same have been secured in position, by exerting a longitudinal draft thereon.
With the above, and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a wire fence tool, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts :the figure is a perspective view showing the manner in which the implement is utilized in tightening a fence wire or strands without looping or twisting.
The implement consists of a shank 1 having one end 2bent at an obtuse angle to its axis and broadened or flattened and provided with a wire-engaging crotch 3, and its other end 4 also bent at an angle to its axis and in the same general direction as the end 2 and formed into an elon ated s iral 5, the terminal of which is inc ined s ightly' toward the shank axis. At the bend of the shank formed by the terminal 2, there is located a laterally disposed headed stud 6,
the shank of which is disposed substantially at right angles to the crotch 3 and is designed to engage with the strand of a wire fence when the same is to have longitudinal tension applied thereto, for the purpose of taking up any slack present.
When the implement is employed for the urpose stated, the crotch is caused to straddle the strand 7 and the headed stud to bear upon the upper side thereof, and the terminal 5 is then grasped and upon the implement being drawn backward, sufficient pull will be exerted upon the strand to remove any looseness therein. During this procedure, it is to be understood that the staples that hold the wires or strands to the post will be partially withdrawn by means of the crotch end, and as soon as the slack is taken up, the sta les are again reseated. This procedure will e carried on throu hout the length of the fence, and at the end the strand will be secured in the usual manner.
I claim:
A fence wire tightener comprising a shank having one end bent at an obtuse angle to its length and provided with a terminal wire-engaging crotch, and a headed stud disposed at the bend of the shank and substantially at right angles to the crotch and arranged to bear upon a fence wire as a fulcrum, whereby to secure tightening thereof without twisting or 100 ing.
In testimony that I c aim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aifixedmy signature in the presence of two witnesses.
.SAMUEL GUTH.
