Description
July'5, 1949. J. SHIELDS" 2,475,525
WIRE STRETCHER AND SPLICER I Filed Aug. 18,1945 I I Q Inventor v I BENJAMINJSH/ELDS Patented July 5, 1949 WIRE STRETCHER AND SPLICER Benjamin J. Shields, Black Springs, Ark., assignor of one-half to John Melbourne Lowery, Norman, Ark.
Application August 18, 1945, Serial No. 611,326
1 Claim.
My invention relates to a wire manipulating tool and has for an object to provide in a single simple tool means for stretching, splicing, twisting and crimping wire.
Another object of this invention is to provide a one-piece tool forming a wire stretcher having means for gripping wires of varying gauges,
A further object of the invention is to provide a wire stretcher having a pair of spaced wire grips whereby a smooth wire may be secured thereto for stretching the same.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view, partly broken away, and illustrating one application of the invention,
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the device and showing another application thereof, and only one wire being shown for clarity;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1, and taken at right angles thereto and illustrating still another application of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings as above enumerated and in the following specification, like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout and in which Ill, indicates my invention which comprises a shank ll, having a right angular crank end l2, which terminates at end IS, in the right angular claw foot M, with a tapered centrally disposed slot l5, within which slot wires of various gauges may be held for purposes presently to be explained. The end of the member II, is turned at right angles as at IS, in an opposing direction to the part l2. A bore i1, is provided in the member I 2, intermediate of the ends l3, and I8, thereof, which bore is adapted to receive the end IQ, of the portion 20, of a wire 2|, which has been projected into the slot 15, whereby when the device is rotated wires so held by the foot l4, after its portion 20 has been wrapped around the arm I2 several times, will be twisted together as indicated at 22.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that I have provided a wire stretcher and splicer which may readily be operated by one person and through means of which barbed or other wires may be stretched and spliced. After a wire has been suitably stretched by using the shank l l,
and arm l6, as a lever and the post 23, as a fulcrum the operator may easily hold the same stretched by placing his body against the arm [6, while nailing the stretched wire to the post for which he must use both hands. In using the device for tightening the upper and lower cables 24, of wire fabric fencing the cable is projected through the slot l5, and the device turned to form crimps 25, therein, a sufficient plurality of which may be made to bring the said cable taut.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having now described my invention that which I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
A device for splicing and tightening wires comprising a shank having an end portion projecting at substantially right angles therefrom, the junction of the shank and the portion cooperating to form a pivotal element when resting on a fence post, said portion having an aperture, a flat and tapered foot extending oppositely at substantially right angles from said portion and having a tapered slot for retaining a plurality of wires, whereby wires may be threaded in the aperture, wound around said portion and projected through the slot, a right angular handle portion integral with said shank, bent oppositely from the end portion, said foot being substantially perpendicular with relation to said handle.
