.5. c. WEBSTER WIRE STREICHER Filed April 9, 1925 I 1 2 m1 7 1 4 t 636/,7NVENT0R I ATTORNEY.
Patented Sept. 8, 1925.
UNITED STATES SILVESTER C. WEBSTER, OF NEVADA, MISSOURI.
WIRE STRETCHER.
Application filed April 9, 1925. Serial No. 21,923.
1"0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILVEs'rER C. VVEB- STER, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Nevada, in the county of Vernon and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l/Vire Stretchers, of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention relates to devices for stretching wire, more particularly the strand wires of fences, and has for one of its objects to simplify the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation, and
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improved de vice.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the slidable pull member holder and the guide member in section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The improved device comprises a vertical member 10 having lateral extensions 11 at the ends adapted to bear against a post or other stationary support and indicated conventionally at 12.
Extending from the bearing member 10 is a relatively long guide member 13 having a lateral arm 14 extending from one side of its free end, and perforated to support a flexible element, for instance a chain indicated conventionally at 15, and adapted to encircle the support 12, and thus couple the bearing member and guide member to the support, the chain having a terminal hook 16 to be engaged with one link of the chain.
Extending from the side of the guide member 13 opposite to the arm 14 is a perforated lug 17 through which a pull member 18 is slidably disposed, the latter being threaded and supplied with a wheel nut 19 hearing against the lug 17.
Slidably disposed upon the guide member 13 is a holding member 20, being coupled to the holding member by clamp nuts 21.
The pull member 18 is formed with an eye 22 to support a wire grip device represented conventionally at 23.
A wire grab device is attached to some convenient part of the device, for instance to the underside of the-lug 17, and represented conventionally at 24.
When the wires of a fence are to be stretched the improved device is coupled to a suitable stationary support, for instance one of the fence posts indicated at 12, by the coaction of the bearing members 11 and the chain 15.
The wheel nut 19 is then rotated to move the member 18 to a position near the post 12, and the wire to be stretched, indicated conventionally at 25, engaged with the grip device 23. The wheel nut is then actuated to exert a pulling force upon the member 18 and stretch the wire past the post 12. If the length of the member 18 is sufficient to stretch the wire to the required extent, the stretched wire is fastened to the post 12 by the usual means, such as staples or the like, and grip member 23 released.
If however the wire is to be stretched to a greater length than the throw of the member 18 will produce, the stretched wire is coupled to the grab device 24, the grip device 23 released and the member 18 and the grip device again moved to a position near the post and the grip device again coupled to the wire, the grab device 24 released and the stretching action repeated, and so on so long as required.
The improved device is simple in con struction, wholly of metal and operates effectually for the purpose described.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification but it will be understood that modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:
1. A wire stretcher comprising a stock having a standard directed at right angles thereto at one end with forked terminals adapted to bear against a stationary support in vertically spaced relation, said stock being formed with a laterally directed perforated lug at the other end, a threaded rod slidable through said lug, an operating nut engaging said rod and bearing against said lug, a guide element slidably engaging said stock and in which said rod is rotative, a wire grip device coupled to said rod and movable therewith, and a flexible element attached at one end to said stock, and adapted to be coupled to the stationary support.
2. A wire stretcher comprising a stock having a standard directed at right angles thereto at one end with. forked terminals adapted to bear against a stationary support in vertically spaced relation, said stock being formed with a laterally directed perforated lug at the other end extending from one side and a laterally directed arm extending from the other side, a threaded rod slida-ble through said lug, an operating nut engaging said rod and bearing against said lug, a guide element slidably engaging said stock and in which said rod is rotative, a wire grip device coupled to said stock, a wire grip device coupled to said rod and movable therewith, and a flexible element attached at one end to the outer end of said arm, and adapted to be coupled to the stationary support at the other end.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
sinvnsrnn o. WEBSTER.
