KNUD K. LEROL, JR, OF AMHERST, MINNESOTA.
WIRE-TWISTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 775,143, dated November 15, 1904.
Application filed March 21, 1904.
To all whom, it Wmy concern:
Be it known that I, KNUD K. LnRoL, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Amherst, in the county of Fillmore and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVire-Twisters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in implements or tools which may be termed wire-twisters. It is designed for use particularly in twisting or splicing together fencewires, as in stringing the Wires in position in building the fence; and it has for its object to effect this in a simple and expeditious manner and with facility.
Said invention consists of the detailed structural features of the same. substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed by the follow ing description, and particularly pointed out by the claims concluding said description.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view thereof. Fig. 2 is a partial front view or plan. Fig; 3 is a view showing the practical application of the implement or tool, as in effecting the tying or twisting together of fence-wires, in connection with means for assisting that operation at one stage or step of such operation. Fig. 4c is a like view as the last described at a later stage or step in the tying or twisting operation. Fig. 5 is a view showing the result of the complete tying or twisting operation.
In the carrying out of myinvention Isuitably or preferably cast the implement or tool in any usual way. Said tool or implement comprises a handle member 1, preferably of the crosssectional and longitudinal area shown, to provide for the requisite grasping-surface for the hand for convenience or facility of actuation and terminates in or is equipped at its effective or one end laterallysay of a line extending through its longitudinal center with an arcuate or hooked gripping lug or jaw 2, facing a line paralleling the greater width of said member. Said handle member has also at the same end a right-angled or lateral extension Serial No. 199,291. No model.)
or lug 3, arranged relatively laterally of the jaw 2 and in a plane inward from the beak or forward edge terminal of the latter to enable it to accordingly bear upon the wire strand while said jaw or hook engages or receives said strands, as shown in Fig. 3.
In using the device or twister, assuming the wire sections 4 and 5 are gripped intermediately of their terminals 6 and 7 by pliers suitably actuated to that end, said twister is so applied to said wire sections that its lug 3 is presented to the terminal 6 and then actuated so as to effect the upward bending of the latter, as indicated in Fig. 3 and shown at the left of the pliers in Fig. 4, the lug 2 having been hooked and bearing upon this one of the wire sections. The twister now after having been unhookcd from the wire sections is reapplied to the upbeat terminal 6 thereof, so as to effect the twisting of the last named around the wire section, constituting the main wire or stringer, as will be rcadil y understood from Fig. at. The companion terminal 7 is subjected to a like manipulation or application of the twister, but only in a reverse manner, thereby tying or twisting said terminal around or upon the other wire section and effectively connecting or uniting said wire sections forming the stringers.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. A tool of the character described, comprising a handle member having at one end a hooked lug overhanging said end and having its terminal arranged in a line passing substantially through the longitudinal center of said handle member, said handle member having also at the same end a second lug adapted to engage the object to be acted upon laterally of and in the same general direction as that in which the latter is engaged by said hooked lug.
2. A tool of the character described comprising a handle member having at one end a hooked lug overhanging said end and having its terminal arranged in a line passing substantially through the longitudinal center of said handle member, said handle member having also at said end a second lug extending latto this specification in the presence of two suberally therefrom, With its upper surface proscribing Witnesses. duced in continuation of the corresponding surface of said handle member end and par- KNUD LEROL alleling a line subtending or touching said WVitnesses: hook-terminal, for the purpose specified. THORE T. JOHNSON,
In testimony whereof I have signed my name RANDI T. JOHNSON.
