Description

Sept. 9, 1924.
O. W. BRITT FENCE WIRE SPLICING AND STRETCHING TOOL Filed Avril 5. 1923 Patented Sept. 9, 1 924. I
UNITED STAT S 0am jw. BRITT, or
nMPon-IA, Kansas r'nnon wmnsrmcme we, srnnronrue TooL,
' A lication-al a April 3,
To all whom dismay-concern."
Be it known that I, ORIN WV. Bnrr'r, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Empo-ria,-in the county of Lyon and State of Kansas, have invented'cert'ain new and use ful Improvements in Fenceire Splicing and Stretching Tools, of which the'following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fence wire splicing and stretching tool and has for its principal object to provide a device which will efficiently and easily splice or stretch the wire strands of a. fence.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a fence wire splicing and stretching tool of the above-mentioned character, which is of such a. constructionas to enable the same to be readily taken apart when notused for the purposes of permitting the same to be easily carried and furthermore can be readily assembled for use whenever necessary.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a fence wire stretching and splicing tool which will enable the broken. ends of astrand of Wire to be readily jointed and thereby enable the, strand of wire to then assume its former condition.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong, durable and further well adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same Figure 1' is a front elevation of my inven tion,
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section taken on lines 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a. detail sectional view showing the connection between the T-coupling and the bar and handle members thereon, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary front elevation of a slightly modified form of the invention illustrating a. plurality of openings of Vario-us sizes in the bar.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred em: bodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the shank which is formed of a p solid'cylindrical bar and is of a suitable 192a; 'srial'no. 629,606.
length. The shank 1 is provided with the apertures 2 which extend transversely therethrough and these apertures 2 are provided at an intermediate point but'preferably adjacent the-lower end ofthe shank. 'Itwill be seen from the drawings that I have pro v1ded two apertures but the same mayibe f provided with any number for'the purposes of permitting'the tool to be used in connection with fence wire strands which are of diflerentgauges. It being understood that the apertures vary in diameter in order to accommodate the proper apertures to the strand of wire which is inserted in the aperture's. The upper end of the as shown at 8 in the drawings and is adapted to be received in the threaded opening prov TheT-coupling 4 has its arms 5 and 6 inter-* vided in the leg portion of the T-coupling 4.
nally threaded for the purposes of receiving the extensions or handles 7 and 8 respectively. These handles 7 and 8 are preferably hollow and provide means whereby the shank l'may be rotated for the purposes of shank 1 is threaded causing the strands of wire inserted through the apertures 2 to be wound around the shank '1 whenthe broken ends of astrand of wire are tobe spliced and stretched.
It will be seen that by providing the shank 1 with a T-coupling and, the handles 7 and- 8 in the manner as above described, the handles 7 and 8 may be easily and readily" disassembled from the T-coupling and also the shank 1 thereby rendering the device detachable in several parts so as to"en-' able the various elements of the tool to be disassembled when not in use for the purposes of conveniently carrying the same. It being understood that it is only necessary to'unfold the threaded connection between the arms and the shank with the T-coupling.
The tool is used. for splicing and stretch ing wire in the well known manner and it is not thought necessaryto further go intodetail as to the use of the tool as same is well known in the art. The simplicity of my tool" and disassembled when not in use. The tool furthermore consists of a. minimum number the use of a number of complicated tools in association therewith when stretching or splicing a wire fence.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved apparatus, it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efiicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention, and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is v A fence-wire tool comprising a solid cylindrical bar having its one end threaded said openings being beveled outwardly at their ends, a T-coupling having its shank portion threaded into engagement with the threaded end 01: said bar, the arm'portions of said coupling'being internally threaded, and a pair of hollow cylindrical handle members externally threaded at their ends and engaged with the arm portions of said T-coupling, the inner threaded end of said bar being adapted for frictional contact with the opposed inner ends of said handle members to securely hold the latter in place in ture.
