SPLICER.
Application filed January 26, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER P. GAR- LETTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Willow Springs, in the county of Howell and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Splicers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tool, the general object of the invention being to provide means for holding the ends of two pieces of wire or the like adjacent each other so that they can be spliced together.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view showingehow the device is used.
Figure 2 is an edge view.
Figure 3 is a view showing the parts in open position.
The remaining figures 4 and 5 are detail views.
As shown in these views the device comprises a pair of members 1 which are pivotally connected together by the pin 2. The short part of each member is provided with a flange 8 adjacent its end, the outer end of which is formed with a notch d to receive a part of the wire to be spliced. The end of each short part is rounded, as at 5, and a button 6 is pivotally connected with said rounded end. This button has one end roughened, as at 7, and its other end elongated to provide a handle 8. The buttons are so arranged that when they are moved Serial No. 615,077.
into contact with the flange 3 they will enter the slot and thus grip the wire therein and prevent the same from being withdrawn from the slot. A plurality of holes 9 are formed in each member adjacent the pivot 2, these holes being adapted to receive a pin 10, fastened to one member by a chain 11, so as to hold the two members in adjusted position.
In using the device the wires A and B are placed in theslots 4 of the flanges 3 and then the buttons are moved into clamping position to hold said wires in the slots. The handles of the members 1 are then pressed together so as to draw the ends of the wires A and B toward each other so that said ends can be spliced in the usual manner. The members are held in adjusted position by placing the pin 10 in a pair of the holes 9 so that both hands can be used for splicing the wires.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A tool of the class described comprising a pair of members pivotally connected to gether, the short end of each member having a flange adjacent its end which is provided with a notch in its outer end and a button pivotally connected to the end of each member and having a gripping end for entering the slot to hold the wire therein, said members having a plurality of holes therein arranged adjacent the pivotal point and a pin for engaging any pair of holes to hold the members in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ALEXANDER PATTERSON GARLETTS.
