To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DIXON F. LYNCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monticello, in the county of Jasper and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to pliers and has for its object the provision of novelly constructed pliers in which powerful leverage may be obtained, in which the jaws will remain substantially parallel in their movement, and which is provided with springs for normally holding the jaws closed.
An important object is the provision of pliers of this character provided at one side with wire cutting means having novel means for its actuation, this wire cutting means being operated automatically upon movement of the handles of the pliers.
Another object is the provision of pliers of this characterwhich are so constructed and arranged that wires may be spliced thereby, the springs above referred to be ing of particular advantage in holding the jaws closed while splicing is effected.
An additional object is the provision of pliers of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, hlghly eflicient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the pliers showing the jaws in closed position,

Referring more particularly to the draws ings, the numerals 10 and 11 designate the handles which may be bifurcated at one end to provide crossed arms 12 which are pivotally connected by a suitable bolt or the like 13. Disposed between the arms 12 of the handles 10 and 11 are jaws 14; which are pivotally connected, as shown at 15, with the handles atpoints spaced from the pivot bolts'13. The ends of the arms 12 carry bolts 16 which extend through slots 17 in the aws 1 1 so that when the handles 10 and 11 are moved apart the jaws 14 will also be moved apart, the provision of the slots 17 preventing binding. A pair of leaf springs 18 are disposed between the handles and are secured thereto at one end and have their other ends engaged within a slot 19 in the pivot bolt 13. By this construction it will be seen that the handles and jaws will be normally held together or in closed position. i
The jaws 11 are provided upon their engaging faces with mating semicylindrical grooves 20 and the meeting faces of the jaws between the grooves and the extremities of the jaws are preferably roughened to prevent slipping of the jaws when engaged upon an article. The bolt 16 which connects the free end of the arm 12 of the ha-ndle 10 with the intermediate portion of one of the jaw members carries a grooved pulley or roller 21 and this same jaw 14 is pro vided adjacent the pulley 21 with a stud 22 and the arrangement of parts is such that the cylindrical opening formed by the mating grooves 20 is disposed between but at .a little distance from the pulley 21 and stud 22. The provision of the grooves 20, pulley 21, and stud 22 enables the device to be used in splicing wires, the wires being brought through the holes formed by the meeting grooves and suitably engaged with the pulley and stud whereby upon rotation of the device the wires will be twisted together.
In order that the device may be used for cutting wire I provide the jaw member 14 opposite the one provided with the splicing devices, with a longitudinally extending recess 23 and disposed within this recess are two members 24. and 25, the former of which is pivoted upon the pivot bolt 15 passing throu h the associated jaw and the latter of whic is provided with a hole pivotally receivipg the bolt 16 which connects the associated jaw with the ends of the arms 12 carried by the handle 11. Each of the members 2 1 and 25 is partly cut away and they are superposed with these cut away portions in engagement and is pivotally connected, as shown at 26. By the cutting away or recessing of the members 24c and In the use of the pliers it will be seen that V theycare used as pliers in the ordinary manner, the positions of the jaws "being con-' trolled by proper manipulationof the handles. Owing to the peculiar connection of V the wire cutting members with the remain der of the pliers, it willbe seen thatzwhen the handles 10 and 1 1 are moved apart "for opening the 'jaws lat, the members '24 and 25 will bemoved upon their pivot point {26 and the blades .27 will be separated whereby a wireto be cut maybe inserted therebetween. When the :handles are subsequently brought together the blades 2.7 will obviously sever the wire. The use of the deviceas a wire splicerhas already been describedand it is believed needs no further explanation.
.From the a-foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided acompartively simple and inexpensive pliers which will-be effective as pliers, inasmuch as means have been provided for insuring powerful leverage for gripping and holding ,materialor an article and with which is. associated novelly constructed means for severing wire,
