T all whom it may] concern Be it known that I, JAMES WV. DURfiAM,
a citizen of the United States, ,residing-Yat Tipton, in the countypf Tipton and State oflndlana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate .Hinges, of
which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates'to improvements in gate hinges. v
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of gate hinges and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and eflicient one or" great strength and' durability,
adapted to be readily applied to gatepostsi of difi'erent sizes and capable of curely attached thereto.
Another important object-0t the invention is to provide a clamping device'for holding the hinge pintle which is formed in a plurality of adjustable sections so as to be being seengageal'ile about difierent sized and different shaped fence posts.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various chan es in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any ofthe advantages ofth'e invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective of the hinge embodying my invention and shown applied to portions of a gate and a post. V
Figure 2 is an elevation of the pintleand clamp thereof,
Figure 3 is a section taken on'the line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrow, V V
Figure l: is a detailed perspecthkeot an. auxiliary device used in conjunction with the clamp, and
auxiliary member and the clamp assembled about a gate post.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the gate 1 of conventional construction is disposed adjacent the fence post 2 which is circular in cross section. A strap hinge member 3' is securely attached to the gate 1 and terminates beyond its hinged side in a loop 4 which is received upon-the vertions 13. These auxiliary igure 5Yis a plan view showing the tical portion 5 of- 'the rightangled shape pintle a The clamp support for the ipintle 6. is formed from a plurality ofsecti0nsLf TWo of these sections;8 are hinged together as at 9and are'provided with longitudinally lextendingfslots ,10 ,having. I a 'pluralityof its upperedge for receiving the headedrivet's notches 1l communicating therewith- 12' which are mounted on the auxiliary secsections 18 terminate in apertured cars 14 for'receiving the bolt having thereon a nut- 16. There are preferably two headed rivets or pins 12 on each of the auxiliary-sections 13 and it will be readily understood from an inspection of may sections 8 so that the clamp device may be disposed about fence posts of varying sizes. It is to be understood also that the angled shaped pintle 6 is integrally formed or otherwise attachedto one of the hinged sections 8.
In Figures 4: and 5 I have disclosed an auxiliary with the clamp device when the. same is disposed about a fence post of square formation or the like such as shown in Figure 5 and indicated at 18. This auxiliary filling device comprises a curved channel bar 19 filling member adapted to be used the drawing that these auxiliary sections 13 be adjusted in relation to the hinged' which has projectingtrom its intermediate '7 portion a filling lug 20 substantially U- shaped in formation. The adjacent hinged member 8 and auxiliary member 13 are dis- T posed in the channel of the channel bar 10 while the lug 20 engages one of the faces of" the post 18 whereby a firm grip may be had upon the post since the clamp will'bcar thereon in five different places as disclosed in Figure 5. Of course, it is readily under stood that as many of these auxiliary filling devices may be used as found necessary or desirable, the illustration in Figure 5 being given only as one example of its'use.
Having thus described my invention what' I claim as new is l. A clamp of the class described including in coinbination'a' pair of hinged sections, a pair of auxiliary sections, one pair of said sections provided with longitudinally extending slots having marginal notches communicating therewith, and pins extending from the other pair of sections adapted to penetrate said slots so as to bemovable therein for engagement with said notches.
hinged 2. A clamp of the class described including in combination a pair of hinged sections, a pair of auxiliary sections, one pair of said sections provided with longitudinally extending slots having marginal notches communicating therewith, pins extending from the other pair of sections adapted to penetrate said slots so asto be movable therein forengagement with said notches, and a pintle mounted on one of the sections, and a member associated therewith.
3. A clamp of the class described including in combination'apair of hinged jaws, each jaw comprising a main section and an auxiliary section, oneot said sections provided with a slot having notches communicating therewith, a pin extending from the other section and'piercing said slot for a post hinge member associated therewith,
a clamp for supporting the latter, a curved channel bar engageable with the clamp, and a lug projecting from the inner periphery of the curved bar in the manner and for the purpose specified. c
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
