sKInT-sUPPoRTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1908.
Application filed April 251907. Serial No. 370.281.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANoIs A. RAY- MOND and FRANK DETTMANN, citizens of the United States, residing at Judson, in the county of Morton and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in skirt supporters, and has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which is peculiarly designed so that it cannot in any manner injure the garment to which it is applied.
To this end the invention is in the nature of a clamp comprising a pair of hinged jaws between which the skirt is clamped, the jaws being normally forced apart by means of a spring and novel means being employed for preventing the garment from coming into contact with the spring.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the skirt supporter, the jaws being in an open position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the hinged portion of the wrench.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The clamp employed for engaging the skirt comprises the companion jaws 1 and 2 which are in the nature of elongated strips and have their lower ends enlarged at 3, the said handle portions terminating in the transverse shoulders 4 on the inner face of the jaws. The enlarged portions 3 of the two jaws of the clamp are hingedly connected by means of a strip 5 extending around the ends thereof and secured to the outer faces thereof. Interposed between the inner faces of the jaws at the enlarged portions thereof is a coil spring 6, the ends of which are received within recesses or depressions 7 formed in the jaws. When the two clamping jaws are forced together the coil spring 6 is entirely housed within the depressions 7 and the two shoulders 4 cooperate with each other to form a stop which prevents that portion of the garment retained between the jaws from slipping downwardly against the spring. A guard is also provided for preventing the garment from coming into contact with the spring when the jaws are swung apart, and
this guard is in the nature of a pin 8 projecting inwardly from one of the jaws above the coil spring 6 and received loosely by an opening in the opposite jaw; It will thus be apparent that as the two jaws are opened and closed the pin 8 slides freely within the said opening and forms a barrier extending across the jaws which effectively prevents the skirt from being drawn downwardly against the spring. The upper end of the jaw 1 is formed with the extension 9 which carries a spring catch 10 designed to engage the extremity of the opposite jaw 2 for the purpose of locking the two jaws in a closed position. This extension 9 may also have a loop 11 of any suitable material applied thereto by means of which the supporter can be connected to the belt or suspended in any other suitable manner.
It will thus be apparent that we have provided an improved supporter by means of which the skirt can be retained in the desired position without injury thereto, thereby leaving the hands free for any desired use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
with the spring, one of said jaws being formed with an extension, and means carried by the extension for engaging the opposite jaw to hold the jaws together.
3. A skirt supporter comprising a pair of clamping jaws having corresponding ends thereof hinged, a spring interposed between the jaws, and a guard for preventing the garment from coming into contact with the spring.
4. A skirt supporter comprising a pair of clamping jaws having corresponding ends thereof hinged, a spring interposed between the clamping jaws, and a pin carried by one of the jaws and operating loosely within an opening in the opposite jaw to prevent the garment from coming into contact with the sprlng.
5. A skirt supporter comprising a pair of clamping jaws having corresponding ends thereof enlarged and hinged, the said enlarged portions terminating in shoulders and being provided with corresponding depressions, a spring interposed between the jaws and operating within the depressions, and a guard member for preventing the garment from coming into contact with the spring.
6. A skirt supporter comprising a pair of clamping jaws having corresponding ends enlarged and hinged, the said enlarged portions being formed with corresponding depressions, a spring interposed between the jaws and operating within the depressions, a guard pin carried by one of the jaws and operating loosely within. an opening in the opposite jaw, one of said jaws being provided with an extension, and means carried by the extension for engaging the opposite jaw for holding the jaws in a closed position.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS A. RAYMOND. FRANK DETTMANN.
