Description
Dec. 30, 1924.
- 1,520,861 J. K. DIAMOND BELT FASTENLER APPLYING DEVICE Filed July 31, 1924 [N ENTOR Jamw K. Dbamond Patented Dec. 3Q, 1924.
JAMES K, DIAMOND, 0F GRAND RAPIDS,
MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR T0 CLIPPER BELT LACER COMPANY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
BELT-FASTENER-APPLYING DEVICE.
Application filed July 31,
Be it known that I, JAMES K. DIAMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Fastener-Applying Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in belt fastener applying devices.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved belt fastener applying device which is efficient and at the same time is very simple and economical in structure and convenient to use.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly described and pointed out in the claims. I
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a side view of my improved belt fastener applying device.
Fig. II is an end view thereof.
Fig. III is a transverse section on a line corresponding to line 3 3 of Fig. I, the device being shown in operative relation to the jaws of a vice, and with a fastener and a belt end therein.
Fig. IV is a cross section corresponding to that of Fig. III with the device closed.
Fig. V is a perspective view of the fastener holder.
Fig. VI is a fragmentary section on a line corresponding to line 6-6 of Fig. I showing structural details.
Fig. VIII is a plan view of a belt end with a set of fasteners applied thereto.
In the drawing similar reference numerals indicate similar parts in all of the views and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
My improved belt fastening device as illustrated comprises a base 1 having upstanding ears 2 at the ends thereof and longitudinal flanges 3 at its edges. A fastener holder 4 having a plurality of transverse slots 1924. Serial No. 729,346.
through the holder and through the ears 2,
the pivot pin being secured by the locking pin 10 arranged transversely through the holder, thus retaining the pin and support, ing the holder with its ends in spaced rela tion to the ears 2.
The jaws 11 are provided with downwardly and inwardly projecting arms 12 disposed between the ends of the holder and the ears in overlapping relation and having elongated holes 13 therein engaging the pin 9.
These jaws are preferably provided with outwardly projecting lips 14 adapted to rest upon the jaws of a vise as indicated at 15.
In using the device a set of fasteners 6 is arranged in the holder and secured therein by the retaining pin 8. The device is then placed between the jaws 15 of a vise, the belt end 16 is supported in the position indicated in Fig. III and the jaws are closed, forcing the prongs of the fasteners into the belt as shown in Fig. IV.
By providing the arms of the jaws with the elongated pivot openings the jaws automatically adjust themselves to belts of varyng thickness; that is, their faces assume a parallel relation as the jaws are closed upon the work.
My improved fastener applying device is very simple and economical in structure and is practical for use by inexperienced workmen, being especially designed by me for use on relatively small belts such as the fan belts of automobiles and the like.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1 v
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a base having upturned ears at its ends and longitudinal side flanges, a
vided with downwardly and inwardly projecting arms disposed between said ears and the ends of said holder and having elongated pivot openings therein engaging said pin, said side flanges of said base constituting stops for supporting said jaws in their open osition.
2. n a structure of the class described, the combination of a base having upturned ears at its ends, a fastener holder disposed with its ends in spaced relation to said ears, said holder having transverse slots and a longitudinal hole adapted to receive a fastener retaining pin, a pin disposed through said ears and longitudinally of said holder, and a pair of jaws provided with arms disposed between said ears and the ends of said holder and having elongated pivot openings therein engaging said pin.
3. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a base having upturned ears at its ends, a fastener holder disposed with its ends in spaced relation to said ears, said holder having transverse slots and a longitudinal hole adapted to receive a fastener retaining pin, a pin disposed through said ears and longitudinally of said holder, and a pair of aws provided with arms disposed between said ears and the ends of said holder and having elongated pivot openings therein engaging said pin, saidjaws having outwardly projecting lips adapted to rest upon the opposed jaws of a vise.
4. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a base having upturned ears at its ends, a fastener holder disposed with its ends in spaced relation to said ears, a pin disposed through said ears and longitudinally of said holder, and a pair of jaws provided with downwardly and inwardly projecting arms disposed between said ears and the ends of said holder and having elongated pivot openings therein engaging said pin, said jaws having outwardly projecting lips adapted to rest upon the opposed jaws of a vise.
5. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a fastener holder, a pair of jaws provided with arms having elongated pivot openings therein, and a pivot on said holder engaging said openings, said jaws having outwardly projecting lips adapted to rest upon the opposed jaws of a vise.
6. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a fastener holder, a pair of jaws provided with arms having elongated pivot openings therein, and a pivot on said holder engaging said openings.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
