Be it known that I, James K. DIAMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Applying Belt Fasteners or Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for applying belt fasteners or hooks. The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved belt fas tener applying device which may be effectively used for applying fasteners to belts of varying thickness and for applying fasteners of different sizes.
Second, to provide a device of the class described having these advantages which is very compact and is adapted to be used in connection with a vise as an actuating means.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation of my invention will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:

In the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference indicate siniilar parts in all of the views.
Referring to the drawing, the structure illustrated is provided with a base plate 1 in the form of a sheet metal stamping having upstanding ears 2 at the ends thereof and side flanges 3. The holder 22 for the hooks or fasteners is arranged between these ears of the base plate, these parts being retained in assembled relation by the pin 4. The jaw supporting arms 5 are preferably, formed as sheet metal stampings, being angled or bent at 5 and terminating in knuckles 6 for the pivot pin 4:. When the jaws are open the angles of the arms are adapted to rest upon the flanges 3 of the base plate, see Fig. II. These supporting arms terminate in the laterally turned flanges 7 The jaws 8 are formed of a pair of members 9 and 10, the members 9 having a groove 11 spaced from its inner edge adapted to receive the flanges 7 of the jaw supporting arms 5, these grooves being of such dimensions as to permit a limited rocking movement of the jaws upon their supporting arms.
Between the members I clamp the wings 12 projecting upwardly and laterally above the jaws to rest upon the jaws 13 of a vise, thereby supporting the device in open position and while the vise is being closed thereon. The jaw member 9 has a case hardened surface. To avoid the necessity of breaking this surface I secure the jaw members together by means of the rivets 14 which are arranged through the outer jaw member 10 to engage holes 15 in the inner or face jaw member, the rivets being expanded in the longitudinal holes 16 which are bored so as to close the holes 15; an expanding tool being inserted in the holes 16 and the rivets 14 being forced thereon, the rivets are expanded at 17 as shown in Fig. IX. This effectively secures the jaw sections together without breaking the surface of the jaws.
By making the jaws in sections and securing them together they are conveniently secured upon the flanges 7, the pins 18 being disposed in the slots 11 of the jaw sections 9 to engage notches 19 in the jaw supporting arms, thereby supporting the jaws against longitudinal movement upon the arms.
The holder 22 has transverse slots 23 therein adapted to receive a plurality of the hooks 21. A bore 2% is formed longitudinally of the holder to receive the hook retaining pin 25. The holder is recessed at 26 on its under side to receive the jaw supporting arms 5, and has holes 27 therein to receive the pin 4.
The holder has longitudinal grooves 28 in the sides thereof adapted to receive the barlike alining members 29 which have a plurality of fingers 30 adapted to enter the fastener receiving slots 23 from opposite sides engaging the fasteners therein as shown in Figs. II and III. These fingers have outwardly projecting cams 31 which are engaged by the U-shaped actuating slide 32 disposed to embrace the holder and resting upon the angled arms 5 so that when the jaw supporting arms are swung inwardly the actuating slide is actuated swinging the fingers inwardly upon the hooks that may be arranged in the holder, alining or centering the same prior to the engagement of the jaws therewith. The springs 33 disposed between the holder and this U-shaped slid-e retract the slide and also serve to hold the jaws normally open. The slide 32 is preferably made as a stamping of resilient material.
In using the device it is loaded with hooks of the proper size for the particular belt and placed within the jaws of the vise as shown in Fig. 11. The belt end 34 is then held in position shown in Fig. I and the jaws of the vise closed as shown in Fig. III. This forces the prongs of the fasteners into the belt. The limited rocking or pivotal movement of the jaws upon the supporting arms allows their faces to assume a parallel position when closed upon belts of varying thickness. The holder effectively supports and alines hooks or fasteners of different sizes.
My improved belt fastener applying device is very convenient to use and the fasteners may be effectively applied by persons without mechanical skill or training. I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment which I have found hirghly satisfactory. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications and adaptations which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a base plate, angled jaw supporting arms, jaws mounted on said arms, a holder recessed on its under side to receive said arms, said holder having transverse fastener receiving slots therein and longitudinal grooves in its sides, a pivot pin for said jaws connecting said holder and base plate, alining members disposed in said grooves in said holder and having fingers thereon entering said transverse slots thereof, the outer edges of said fingers being cammed, a U-shaped actuating slide disposed above said jaw supporting arms to be actuated thereby and to embrace said holder and coact with the cams of said alining member fingers, and springs disposed between said slide and holder acting to return the slide to retracted position and to open said jaws.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a holder having transverse fastener receiving slots therein and longitudinal grooves in its sides, angled jaw supporting arms pivotally mounted with respect thereto, mounted on said arms, alining members disposed in said grooves in said body member and having fingers thereon engaging said transverse slots thereof, a U-shaped actuating slide for said aligning mmebers disposed to embrace said holder and so that itis actuated by the closing of the jaws, and a spring acting to return the slide to retracted position and to open said jaws.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a holder having transverse fastener receiving slots therein, means for retaining the fasteners in said slots, jaw supporting arms having flanged outer edges pivotally associated with said holder, and jaws slotted to receive said flanged edges of said arms, the slots being of such dimensions as to provide for limited rocking movement of the jaws on the arms.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a fastener holder, jaw supporting arms pivotally associated with said holder and having flanged outer edges, jaws slotted to receive said flanged edges on said arms, the slots being of such dimensions as to permit limited rocking movement of the jaws on the arms, and projecting wings on the upper edges of said jaws adapted to rest upon the jaws of a vise..
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a fastener holder, jaw supporting arms pivotally associated with said holder and having flanged outer edges, and jaws slotted to receive said flanged edges on said arms, the slots being of such dimensions as to permit limited rocking movement of the jaws on the arms.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a fastener holder, jaw supporting arms pivotally associated with said holder, jaws mounted on said arms for limited rocking movement, and rests on said jaws adapted to engage the jaws of a vise.
7 In a device of the class described, the combination of a holder having transverse fastener receiving slots and longitudinal grooves in its sides, a pair of coacting jaws associated with said holder, aligning members disposed in said grooves in said holder having fingers thereon entering said trans verse slots and the outer edges of said fingers being downwardly inclined, a re silient U-shaped actuating slide embracing said holder to coact with the cams of said fingers, a retaining pin disposed longitudinally of the holder to retain the hooks arranged therein, and operating connections from the jaws to said slide whereby the slide is actuated upon the closing of the jaws.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination of a holder having transverse fastener receiving slots and longitudinal grooves in its sides, a pair of coacting jaws associated with said holder, aligning mem bers disposed in said grooves in said body member having fingers thereon entering said transverse slots, an actuating slide coacting with said retaining members, a re taining pin disposed longitudinally of the holder to retain the hooks arranged therein, and operating connections from the jaws to said slide whereby the slide is actuated upon the closing of the jaws.
9. In a device of the class described, the combination of a holder having transverse fastener receiving slots therein, angled jaw supporting arms pivotally mounted relative to said holder, jaws carried by said arms, alining members disposed at the sides of said holder and having fingers thereon entering said slots thereof, a resilient actuating slide embracing said holder to engage said alining members and resting upon said angled jaw supporting arms to be actuated thereby, and a spring acting to return the slide to retracted position and to open said jaws.
10. In a device of the class described, the combination of a holder having transverse fastener receiving slots therein, angled jaw supporting arms pivotally mounted relative to said holder, jaws carried by said arms, alining members disposed at the sides of said holder and having fingers thereon entering said slots thereof, and a resilient actuating slide embracing said holder to engage said alining members and resting upon said angled jaw supporting arms to be actuated thereby.
11. A device of the class described comprising a holder slotted to receive a plurality of fasteners, jaw supported arms pivoted with respect thereto, jaws mounted on said arms for limited rocking movement thereon, fastener alining means, and actuating means for said fastener alining means operatively associated with said jaws.
12. A device of the class described comprising a holder slotted to receive a plurality of fasteners, jaws operatively associated with said holder, fastener alining means, and actuating means for said fastener alining means operatively associated with said aws.
13. In a device of the class described, the combination of a holder having transverse slots therein adapted to receive a plurality of hooks, a fastener retaining pin disposed longitudinally of holder through the slots thereof, fastener alining means comprising fingers adapted to enter the slots from opposite ends thereof, means for closing said fingers, jaws pivotally mounted relative to said holder, and operating connections for said aws to said fingers whereby the fasteners are automatically alined upon the closing of the jaws.

In a device of the class described, a fastener holder having transverse fastener receiving slots and longitudinal grooves in its sides, alining members disposed in said grooves and having fingers thereon entering said slots, the outer edges of said fingers being cammed, a resilient U-shaped actuating slide embracing said holder to coact with the cams of said fingers, and a retaining pin disposed longitudinally of the holder and through the transverse slots thereof to retain the fasteners arranged therein.
15. In a device of the class described, a fastener holder having transverse fastener receiving slots and longitudinal grooves in its sides, alining members disposed in said grooves and having fingers thereon entering said slots, an actuating slide embracing said holder to coact with said alining members, and a retaining pin disposed longitudinally of the holder and through the transverse slots thereof to retain the fasteners arranged therein.
16. In a device of the class described, a holder having transverse fastener receiving slots therein, alining members disposed in the sides of said holder and having fingers entering said transverse slots thereof, and a resilient actuating slide disposed to embrace said holder and coacting with said alining members.
17 In a device of the class described, the combination of a fastener holder, jaw supporting arms pivotally associated with said holder, jaws mounted on said arms for limited rocking movement, and means for closing said jaws engaging the jaws above the pivot points thereof, said jaws and arms having ooengaging parts whereby the inward movement of the aws relative to the arms is predetermined.
18. In a device of the class described, the combination of a fastener holder, jaw supporting arms pivotally associated with said holder, jaws mounted on said arms for lim ited rocking movement, and means for closing said jaws engaging the jaws above the pivot points thereof, said jaws and arms having co-engaging parts whereby said jaws are brought to parallel relation on the closing movement thereof.
19. In a device of the class described, the combination of a fastener holder, jaw supporting arms pivotally associated with said holder, jaws rockingly mounted on said arms, said jaws and arms having co-engaging parts supporting said jaws in parallel relation when closed upon the work, and means for closing said jaws engaging the jaws above the pivot points thereof.
